bryant to 10-day DL...baez still out of the lineup...bote called up

Rizzo 1B, Almora CF, Heyward RF, Contreras C, Happ 3B, Schwarber LF, Russell SS, Chatwood P, Bote 2B

Bote at SS...

Anybody else notice that since his initial call-up Bote has played more SS (at AAA) than at any time in his career. He started 11 games for 101 innings at Rookie ball in 2012 & comhined for another 99 inninings at various levels in 2013. Since his MLB debut he's started 13 games at SS for >100 innings, including 4 of the last 7 played for Iowa.

Obviously he's not going to be a SS fulltime, but I think it's fair to infer that he's being groomed as the third/emergency SS for Sept & Oct.

Former Cub prospect Billy McKinney headed to Blue Jays as second piece in JA Happ trade to Yankees.

I really love these early innings bases loaded situations. They really get my blood pumping, and prove that I'm really alive.

4.2 IP, 6 BB for Chatwood today. I'd be surprised if they don't swing a trade for another starter within the next month. It's just not sustainable to keep rolling him out there.

Duensing = grand slam. I'd be surprised if they don't swing a trade for another left handed reliever within the next month.  It's just not sustainable to keep rolling him out there.

I don't have the heart to go see what this performance does to Chatwood's standings in the all-time most-walks-per-nine rankings for a single season...

Billybucks now banned from attending any future Chatwood starts!

Edit: guess that edict needs to be reconsidered! Billybucks, what's the record now for Chatwood starts you've attended?

Just back from the ballpark -- my ears are still ringing!  Wow!

Eric S -- I was ready for a self-ban about mid-game.  Chatwood seemed to be in early-2018 survival mode -- lots of walks, but not many runs.  Avila's HR seemed wind-aided. Then the Duensing Disaster came in.  Walks a LH hitter, then grooves a grand slam that almost hit the video board.  I'm sure Brian's a good guy and all, and he was a contributor last year,  but his time has to be up.  He simply cannot get hitters out.  Theo needs to bring the Red Sox model of knowing when to eat some salary and move on.

Somehow, I am 2-1 in my Chatwood starts.  I think we should just leave it at that and move on.  Time to give another starter a try.

Today was a billybucks first -- I have been to one other walk-off win at Wrigley, but the game was tied going into the 9th.  I have never been to a walk-off win when the Cubs trailed in the 9th.  I highly recommend it!

My only regret -- with the new bullpen location (boo!), I didn't get to see Strop high-steppin' with Rizzo as he headed for home.

PHIL: Can either Tyler Chatwood or Brian Duensing refuse an assignment to Iowa?

[ ]

In reply to by The E-Man

E-MAN: Both Chatwood and Duensing can decline a minor league assignment. So barring a DL assignment, expect either Randy Rosario to be optioned to Iowa or a Brian Duensing or Eddie Butler DFA when Hamels is activated (which again could be as late as Sunday, or even Monday depending on when the trade is officially announced), and then another pitcher will have to be dropped from the 25 when Brandon Morrow is ready to be reinstated from the DL (which could be sometime this weekend).

Also, the Cubs have an off day on Monday so they won't need a 5th starter again until a week from Saturday, so they will have a few days to decide who the #5 starter will be going forward (presumably either Chatwood or Montgomery).

94ip 82h 85bb 82k with a 4.98era

neat.

i can't wait for 2.5 more years of this.

he's got a 0.3 WAR on BR and a -0.2 WAR on FG...so he's at least replacement level...he's got that going for him...well, that and $38m.

Javy wild swinging pays off - WP swinging strike three scores a run. Good sign they didn't pull him for a pinch runner.

BOB BRENLY

man, i miss len/bob.  i like jd, but len/bob had a nice chemistry and played well off each other setting up jokes/comments.

RIZZO!!!!!!

CUBS WIN!

wow, what a game.

For the love of god, Almora, no hopping on Rizzo.  1034 day DL stint with strained lower back...

"According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Cubs have emerged as the "front-runner" to acquire Cole Hamels, though the Braves "remain in the mix.""

a'ite then.

anyway...who's going to TEX with r.lacy?

v.caratini? m.montgomery? ...something lesser hopefully.

...and who gets screwed out of their starting job if it's not montgomery going in trade...chatwood or montgomery?  how much longer can chatwood get chances?

TEX game probably won't be over for another 3-ish hours...maybe we'll find out before then.

The Human Walkman can go fuck himself. Get DL’d. Be a double header starter. Go home and change diapers.

I forgot, in September he can be a pinch runner.

He is my new Will Oh-Man!

Anyway, I still have the ticket from when Hammels had his Wrigley no-hitter. 2015 I think? CRUNCH had an off day.

supposedly the deal for hamels will be for "low level prospects" and cubs picking up some of the loot.

keeping caratini and montgomery would be nice.

cubs minor league watchers are on "hug watch" for potential pieces involved in the trade.

mlb.com has a trade confirmation story up.

"ARLINGTON -- The Rangers have reached an agreement to trade left-handed pitcher Cole Hamels to the Cubs, sources confirmed on Thursday night. The clubs have not yet announced the deal because there are still details to work out, including the examination of medical reports on the Cubs' Minor League players involved in the deal. But the trade is expected to be completed as soon as tonight, a source said."

Remember that a player acquired in a trade must be added to the club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) immediately, but the club has up to 72 hours to add the player to the MLB Active List (25-man roster). So expect the Cubs to transfer Yu Darvish to the 60-day DL as soon as the trade is officially announced, but the 25-man roster transaction could be delayed until Sunday.

Reminds me of when they acquired Dan Haren, albeit Haren was clearly older and pitching on fumes. Not sure I should be excited, everyone is quoting reverse splits (the Chatwood explanation) but I'd be glad if someone could change my mind. On the other hand, these Chatwood starts are killing the bullpen, so we got that going for us. Which is nice.

horrible july, but april/may/june were not bad.  it's really dragged down his numbers.  hopefully there's more april-june and less july left in him.  his velocity and command didn't get worse in july...much the same...he was getting hit a lot more, though.

on the home/road split side of things, he gave up over twice as many HRs at home in TEX (16 in 59ip vs 7 in 55.1ip)

So, I guess the "easy" answer is Hamels to the rotation and Chatwood to the bullpen, where he can pitch in blowouts (sorry Vic, Happ and Rizz), work on some stuff, and, who knows, maybe become an effective reliever.  Stranger things have happened.

However, keeping Monty in the rotation would give the Cubs a rotation with 4 lefties, which would be unusual and probably not preferred, since opposing hitters in a series would get a similar look most days.

Another answer is to move Monty to the pen, because he might help the team there and they are already concerned about his innings.  But, that doesn't solve the Chatwood problem that Hamels was presumably acquired to address.

Over to you, Joe (and Theo and Jed).

LHSP Justin Steele (July 2017 TJS) has completed his AZL rehab assignment and will replace Rollie Lacy in the Myrtle Beach starting rotation beginning this weekend. Steele has made an amazing recovery and (as things stand right now) is a good candidate to get added to the Cubs MLB 40-man roster on 11/20 (he is first-time Rule 5 Draft-eligible post-2018). He also could get an AFL slot if the Cubs want him to throw more innings after the conclusion of the minor league season.

I saw an article on MLB.com that floated the Cubs IFA money remaining as $3.05 million. My back-of-the-envelope math had it much less. ($600,000 or so. Probably less.)

The article was on Victor Victor Mesa. If the Cubs have anywhere near $3.05 million after their other signings, I have no idea where the extra loot came from.

TIM: The only 2018-19 J-2 IFA the Cubs have officially signed are:

Richard Gallardo, RHP ($1M)
Joel Machado, LHP ($850K)
Yohendrick Pinango, OF (NFI)
Gabriel Jaramillo, RHP (NFI)
Ronny Simon, INF (NFI)

The other reported signings are not official (yet) and might not be until after the conclusion of the DSL season (so that the players will not be Rule 5 Draft-eligible until post-2023 instead of post-2022).

The Cubs also get $300K in 2017-18 ISBP cap space back due to RHP Florencio Serrano Jr's contract being voided, and that $300K is added to the Cubs 2018-19 ISBP, so the Cubs 2018-19 ISBP is actually $5.05M (not $4.75M).

Rollie Lacy pitched a no-hitter this year for SB (in 7), and does have excellent stats. I hope this does not come back to haunt them in their prospect-bare pitching cupboard.

Re Hammels CUBSTER, when I last looked Cole has pitched 114 innings to ChatWalk’s 80. Lester and Hendricks are at 120. Quintana is at around 96 I think. So, that’s something.

So let's say Hamels regains his once elite pitcher status, do you keep him for the $20MIL or buy him out for $6MIL (like the consesus is)  Say you keep him you have Lester, Q, Hendricks, Yu, Chatwood, Hamels, Monty, and Smyly all fighting for 5 SP

Hamels goes from cellar to 1st place - could a touch of the Verlander Effect be in the offing?

The Texas pitching pipeline continues to produce -- Hendricks, Edwards, Chavez, Darvish (coming soon) and now Hamels.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

  • Childersb3 (view)

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

  • crunch (view)

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
