Diamondbacks @ Cubs: Ray vs Lester (Game 101)

AZ (56-46): LHP Robbie Ray (6-4, 3.24)
CHC (58-42): LHP Jon Lester (12-3, 3.14)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Lester didn’t have it on Friday—to say the least, going 3 innings and giving up 8 ER. Now he can pitch without all of that nasty Cy Young pressure on him. Overall, the D’backs are 26-80 (.325) against him. Goldschmidt is 5-9 with a HR.

Ray gave up 5 ER in 5.1 innings but ended up with a no-decision against the Rockies his last time out. The Cubs are 3-23 (.130) against him. Heyward is 2-4.

Chatwood and Godley tomorrow at 1:20pmCST to close out the series.

Go Cubs!

Amazing the Cubs are in first place:

- They got nothing from FA Darvish

- FA Chatwood is an epic walk machine

- FA Morrow breaks down every few weeks

- Bryant is a one-armed singles hitter

- And, for fun, every decent prospect is injured

I think they need most (if not all) of the first 4 things to reverse themselves, and hopefully soon.

I was just thinking what they would have to do for me to feel OK about their chances in playoffs. Basically, they need a fully healthy and effective Darvish, Lester doing what he's doing, and either Hendricks or Quintana on a hot stretch. If they don't have three of those better starters going strong, I have a hard time seeing them making it past three good playoff teams.

Looks like the Cubs and Rangers have agreed on a Cole Hamels trade. 2.93 road ERA vs. 6.41 in home run friendly Texas. Has playoff experience. Cubs can now stack 4 lefties if they want in a playoff series vs. Dodgers.

I still think the Cubs need a left handed reliever. Wilson has been good, but struggles with walks at times, Rosario has a 2.03 ERA, but 5.10 FIP, and Duensing has struggled. Maybe someone like Zach Duke, Jake Diekman, or Luis Avilan.

doing the "pitcher hitting 8th thing"again...

Rizzo 1B, Almora CF, Zobrist 2B, Contreras C, Russell SS, Schwarber LF, Happ RF, Lester P, La Stella 3B

baez has a knee brace on, but isn't hobbling...bryant might need a DL stint (left shoulder).

David DeJesus and Daughter in the TV booth for the 7th.  The kid, maybe a tweener, is dabbing?  doing the dab? whatever, get off my lawn, each time she's on TV.  David had to tell her not to dab on TV.  Classic.

This feels like one of the early season games -- Ray comes in with a 5+ ERA, and the Cubs can't touch him. I realize he was really good last year, but he's been really bad this year.

C'mon boys, let's get a W! Brewers, Pirates (!) and Cards have all lost.

Win or lose, big take away is that Lester looked good, particularly after his last (disastrous) start.

Also, hope Javy is a quick healer.

No data to support this, but it seemed to me that every time Lester had a really bad start last year (and there were a few), he followed it with a pretty good one.  Nice to see him rack up a few Ks today.  Unlucky not to get a W, but that run in the 8th was a much-needed gift.

Let's get the split tomorrow! -- if, for no other reason, because I'm going.  This will be my 3rd game of the year -- and my 3rd Chatwood start.  Always fun to see the catcher look like a soccer goal keeper -- leaping and diving all over the place to keep the ball in front of him.

baez doesn't look so slick running to 2nd.  also, woo he got to 2nd to lead off the inning.

no pinch runner?  okay.

okay, t.chatwood comes in to pinch run after a 1-0 count.  alright...

This Yankees/Red Sox arms race is fun to watch.  Amazingly, one of them will be in the Wild Card game.

WAS beats MIL...cubs back up by 2.5 games.

also, WAS is 1 game under .500 while PHI + ATL battle it out for the NL East...weird.

Wade Davis...

Sporting a 4.61 ERA this year. Almost exactly two points higher than with the Cubs.

Sort of dodged a bullet. But took another one.

And picked the wrong horse with Yu.

c.coleman only lasted 1.1ip last night in iowa...5h, 3bb, 6er

also, c.gimenez pitched an inning of 1-hit, 0 run ball...because having position players pitch is -the- hot 2018 thing.  seriously, i can't remember any time in my lifetime so many position players have pitched (not just the cubs, but all teams).

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate not only all your posts but how eager you are to respond to our questions.

Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error?

Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

  • Childersb3 (view)

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?
