Mets @ Cubs: Vargas vs Mills (Game 132)

NYM (58-73*): LHP Jason Vargas (4-8, 6.96)
CHC (77-53*): RHP Alec Mills (0-0, 1.17)
First pitch: 1:20ishpmCST

While we wait for yesterday's game to conclude and for the comments feature to be fixed (thanks, Michael!), here's an overview of what's on tap for today.

Mills pitched well enough to win (5.2 IP, 1 ER) but ended up with a no-decision against the Reds on Friday. None of the Mets have faced him.

Vargas kept the Nationals off the board for six innings for the win his last time out. He’s been hurt and shitty. Zobrist (12-29, 1 HR) and Rizzo 0-6 are the only two Cubs to have faced him.

Montgomery faces Foltynewicz in a one-night stand (a make-up from May 17) in Hotlanta tomorrow at 6:35pmCST on our way to Philly.

Go Cubs!

evidently this game is supposed to feature a "maddon's been smoking crack" lineup...can't wait to see that one.

Schwarber LF, Almora CF, Zo 2B, Rizzo 1B, Bote SS, Contreras C, La Stella 3B, Mills P, Happ RF

not as crazy as advertised...though schwarber is leading off vs a lefty and bote is playing SS.

kintzler into the game with 2 on...that sounds promising.

also, caratini playing 3rd.

whatever.

...oh look, a run in.  great.

...oh look, 2 more runs.  neat-o.

Bryant not in the lineup tonight at Iowa and not listed on the Iowa extra position players.  I would say he will be flying with the team to Atlanta and be activated tomorrow with (in my opinion) one of the 13 pitchers (Rosario?) being sent down for the two days until they can increase the roster.

It would make more sense to me for them to send Mills down to fit Bryant on the roster, but then I don't know if that means Mills has to stay down for a certain length of time. I know AZ Phil would know the answer to that. If there is a time limit though, I do know that they can come up with an injury for someone like Rosario after he pitches another day, and send him down and replace him with Mills, since I believe they are going to the 6-man rotation and still need Mills to pitch in 6 more days.

LRB: It used to be that a player on Optional Assignment to the minors could be recalled as soon as his minor league club's season concluded, but it's not that way anymore. Now a player who is optioned to the minors must remain on Optional Assignment for at least ten days even if his minor league club's season has concluded - UNLESS - the player is recalled to replace a player who is placed on the DL or other MLB inactive list (Paternity Leave, Bereavement/Family Medical Emergency Leave, et al).

The Cubs will likely recalled Adbert Alzolay from his Optional Assignment on Saturday (9/1) and then immediately place him on the 60-day DL, which will open up a slot on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster for another player (Gore, Gimenez, Bass, or ???). Presuming that happens, the Cubs will have a brief window where they can recall a player from an Optional Assignment to "replace" Alzolay on the MLB Active List without that player having spent at least ten days on Optional Assignment to the minors prior to being recalled.

So (for example) the Cubs could option Randy Rosario, Alec Mills, or even Kyle Hendricks to Iowa today (Thursday) and then recall him on Saturday after Alzolay is recalled from Iowa and is placed on the Cubs MLB 60-day DL, thereby opening up a spot for Mike Montgomery on the 25-man roster so that he can start the game in Atlanta tonight or for Kris Bryant if he were to be recalled from his Article XIX-C Minor League Rehab Assignment and reinstated from the DL prior to Saturday.

MIL/CIN game is insane.  high scoring, flip-flop ties and leads, awful pitching, lots of homers...yelich has hit for the cycle.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
