Cubs @ Nationals: Garcia vs Scherzer (Game 141)

CHC (83-57): LHP Jaime Garcia (3-6, 5.93)
WAS (69-72): RHP Max Scherzer (16-6, 2.28)
First pitch: 3:05pmCST

Garcia, who started in the rotation for the Blue Jays, has been pitching out of the pen since July. A 6.00+ ERA will do that to you. In August he pitched 5.2 scoreless innings and picked up a win along the way, so let’s go with that. Overall, the Nationals are 16-74 (.216) against him. Kendrick is 3-4 with a HR.

By matching him up with Scherzer, Joe seems to be aiming for a split of the double bill. We should get a funky line-up for this one.

Scherzer had a no-decision against the Cardinals his last time out (7 IP, 3 ER). He went seven scoreless for a no-decision at Wrigley on August 12—in the Bote game.

Hamels and TBD in the nightcap at 6:05pmCST.

Let's win two!

WAS is letting fans who bought tickets to last night's rain delay game...who nearing hour 2 of today's rain delay makeup...turn in their tickets for a game on another date.

what a mess...

tarp is still on the field for the makeup game and the scheduled night game is supposed to start in 2hr 20m-ish.

walk, K, walk, walk...3 sb...no ball put in play and bases loaded.

chatwood on the bench going "dude, i could do this."

Watching LaStella play 3rd is entertaining.

If we're going to start Garcia and hit LaStella 2nd playing 3rd, why not just fully admit we're punting the first game and playing for the second.  I want a game one lineup of Gore leading off in Left, LaStella 3B, Bote 2B, Caratini 1B, Almora CF, Russell SS, Davis C, Mike Montgomery RF, Garcia SP

chatwood gives up a rbi single to scherzer...that is so damn chatwood.

he also has a HBP a WP and a walk in his 18 pitches.

CHATWOOD!

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
