Brewers @ Cubs: Miley vs Lester (Game 143)

MIL (82-62): LHP Wade Miley (3-2, 2.12)
CHC (83-59): LHP Jon Lester (15-5, 3.53)
First pitch: 7:00pmCST

After pitching only one inning in Friday’s postponed game, Lester gets a quick turnaround. He beat Milwaukee at Wrigley on April 5 (6 IP, 0 ER). Overall, they are 44-157 (.280) against him. Braun is 8-18.

Miley gave up 1 ER in 6 innings to beat the Cubs his last time out. For their careers, they are 23-108 (.213) against him. Almora is 3-5 with a HR.

The Brewers are currently 2 games back in the division.

Quintana and Chacin tomorrow at 7:05pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Comments

d.smyly has been shut down for the season.

he's allegedly healthy...they just don't think he'll be stretched out enough to contribute before the season ends or something whatever.

Every time I think the Cubs have the division locked up, they start losing and Brews/Cards start winning.  Every time I think the Cubs are falling apart and may lose the division, they start winning.  With that in mind, here is my prediction for this series with the Brewers:

Today: Win (3 games up)

Tomorrow: Lose (2 games up)

Wednesday: 24 inning tie game, finished at a later date.

Murphy 2B, Bryant LF, Rizzo 1B, Baez 3B, Zobrist RF, Almora CF, Contreras C, Lester P, Russell SS

Is Maddon high?  Not the situation to insert Carl Jr with his current struggles

In reply to by crunch

Joe left Lester in after he was clearly hurt.  Two outs, nobody on.  A single and a double later, he brings in CJ to uncork a first-pitch WP which brings in the go-ahead (edit: Winning) run.  Try to limit yourself to one stupid decision per inning, please.  Cubs, Bears, Kopech, NU loses to Duke -- too much bad sports karma around Chicago right now. Oh, and Matt Adams just hit a 3-run bomb in the 8th to give STL the lead.  Literally every bit of sports news over the last 3 days has been bad. Woof.

Edit: This loss is completely on Maddon.  Inexcusable decisions on Lester and CJ.  Beyond dumb.

Oof. Lester vs Miley and the Cubs appear out-classed in all phases of the game. I did like Zobrist's army crawl retrieving the ball in the RF corner earlier but not a lot of juice otherwise.

And for God's sake, can a Cub pitcher retire Lorenzo Cain one time this game?

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
