Hamels gave up 2 ER in 6.2 for a no-decision against the Reds on Friday. Overall, the D’backs are 15-75 (.200) against him. Souza is 1-3 with a HR.

Ray, who had a no-decision against the Cubs at Wrigley on July 25 (7 IP, 1 ER), gave up 2 ER in 5.1 innings in Houston for a no-decision his last time out. For their careers, these Cubs are 10-55 (.182) against him. Almora is 2-3.

Tomorrow is the last day off, then it’s Quintana and Lopez Friday at 3:10pmCST on the Southside.

Lots of buzz on Chicago sports radio today about Theo calling out Joe for violating the plan with Morrow (as in, "I thought we agreed not to pitch him 3 days in a row"), Theo mentioning that the pain started after that fateful 3rd consecutive game (June 2 in NY -14th inning, Cubs up 7-1) and Theo calling this a "lesson learned" and saying this is what happens when you "stray away from structure".

Or maybe another lesson to be learned is that this is what happens when you sign a closer who is so physically fragile that he can't pitch three days in a row without blowing out his elbow. Whose decision was it to sign Morrow in the first place?

Haven't been able to watch as much Cubs baseball lately.

Why has Bote been struggling? Is he still making the same amount of hard contact?

Any update on Bobby Wilson? Don't get the point of the Gimenz-Wilson trade if Wilson isn't ever going to be activated, but it doesn't matter much anyways.

don't know for sure, but the c.gimenez trade seems to be "being a good bro" trade...cubs letting a vet get some work via another team to end out the season.

MIN lost their catching crew to injury and what was there was sucking.  there was about a 0% chance of gimenez making the post-season roster.  he could go to MIN and get some decent playing time to finish up the year and the cubs get a defense guy as a backup.

so far it's not been great for the cubs given that MIN isn't the only team this could have been done...pretty sure at the very least the cubs expected a warm body that could suit up by now.

I actually think he’s been having more problems with the low pitch lately. Stuff diving out of the zone especially. I think he’s been pressing a bit to hit the low pitch when he sees it. Still making hard contact though. Think he’ll settle in and adjust over time.

Atl 7, StL 3. Final. Cards now 6 games behind the Cubs with their last three in Chicago (hopefully vs a team that has clinched the division).

Wonder if the Cards will make the wild card game. Looking more like Brewers vs. Dodgers/Rockies. At least they need to burn their hottest pitcher to get to the NLDS and the other series becoming, Braves vs winner of West. Would be interesting if LA misses the playoffs but StL needs to wake up for that to happen. Tough for me to root for that.

AZ PHIL- Allen Webster already signed a minor league successor contract for 2019, but now that his contract was selected, how does that affect that because he's now on the Cubs 40, does that void that contract or is it if the Cubs choose not to tender him a contract does it automatically just go back to the minor league successor contract or does he become a free agent?

cubbies.4ever: If the Cubs choose not to tender Allen Webster a 2019 Major League contract on 12/2 he becomes a non-tendered free-agent just like any other unsigned player on the MLB 40-man roster who is non-tendered. The only way his minor league successor contract would apply is if Outright Assignment Waivers are secured and he is sent outright to the minors prior to being non-tendered. (Webster signed a 2019 minor league successor contract prior to having his contract selected and being added to the Cubs 40-man roster, but he is now signed to a 2018 major league contract, and he will not be tendered -- or not tendered -- a 2019  major league contract until 12/2.  

Also, Webster does - NOT - have the right to elect Article XX-D free-agency if he were to be outrighted (he does not have enough MLB Service Time, and although he has been released previously in his career, he has not previously been outrighted).  

In addition, Webster (and this is also true for Terrance Gore, BTW) is (inconveniently) out of minor league options, which is why he will likely be dropped from the 40 soon after the conclusion of the post-season to avoid having the potential problem of getting him through waivers at the end of Spring Training if he has a strong Cactus League but there is no place for him on the Cubs 2019 Opening Day 25-man roster. (If Webster is signed to a 2019 minor league contract with an NRI to Spring Training and then does not make the Cubs 2019 Opening Day 25-man roster, the Cubs can just assign him to Iowa and he can pitch there until there is an opening for him in Chicago later in the season, sort of like what happened with Anthony Bass in 2018). 

And because he was added to the 40 after August 15th, Webster (like Terrance Gore and Taylor Davis) has Rule 6 Draft-Excluded Player status, meaning if Outright Assignment Waivers are not requested by 5 PM (Eastern) on the 5th day after the final game of the World Series and he is not outrighted to the minors prior to the Rule 5 Draft, he cannot be sent outright to the minors any earler than 20 days prior to 2019 MLB Opening Day (so that the Cubs would not be able to outright Webster to the minors in December, January, February, and for part of March if they need his 40-man roster slot for another player during the off-season, although he could be traded or released). 

So as things stand right now, the Cubs will likely either try to secure Outright Assignment Waivers and outright Webster to the minors very soon after the conclusion of the World Series (because they can't do it after the Rule 5 Draft if it turns out they need his slot on the 40 for maybe a free-agent or a waiver claim in December-January-February-March) -- although if they do that they would risk losing him off waivers, or non-tender him on 12/2 (thus avoiding the waiver trap) and then try and re-sign him to a 2019 minor league contract (his 2019 minor successor contract would be voided by the non-tender) for "40-man roster money" with an NRI to Spring Training. 

The problem is, there is a twelve-day gap between the filing of minor league reserve lists on 11/20 and the tendering (or non-tendering) of major league contracts on 12/2, and if the Cubs believe they need Webster's slot on the MLB 40-man roster on 11/20 to protect a Rule 5 Draft-eligible player they do not want to lose, they might not be able to wait until 12/2 to remove him from the 40.

AZ PHIL-  That is a ton of info on Webster's situation.  So he'll likely be back (at least at Iowa until TBD), that's good (hopefully).  I'd assume Taylor Davis just does the same since he seems to enjoy his role as Iowa fan favorite, catching at Iowa for the past 4 years, understanding his no real future with the Cubs, but getting a September call up.  Do you think Terrance Gore will be back or was he just their late season speed pickup?

cubbies.4ever: I think in a perfect world the Cubs would like to have Terrance Gore at Iowa in 2019, and then bring him up in September when rosters expand, just like they did this year. However, the problem is how to remove Gore from the MLB 40-man roster.

If they need his roster slot for a Rule 5 Draft-eligible player on 11/20 (and they probably will), Gore will have to be removed from the 40 prior to 12/2 (the contract tender date). This means placing him on Outright Assignment Waivers where he could get claimed. Or if he is not claimed off waivers and then is outrighted to the minors, he can elect free-agency. That doesn't mean the Cubs couldn't re-sign Gore to a 2019 minor league contract if he were to be outrighted and then elect free-agency (the Cubs did that with Mike Freeman last year), it's just that he might get more $$$ and/or a better pathway to MLB with another organization once he becomes a FA and has a chance to negotiate with other clubs. 

Generally speaking, non-tendering a player on 12/2 (to avoid waivers) and then re-signing him to a pre-arranged minor league contract (for "40-man roster money") and with an NRI to Spring Training (after the Rule 5 Draft) is the best approach. That also would apply to Justin Hancock, Allen Webster, and Taylor Davis (in fact that's exactly what happened with T. Davis last year), but as is the case with Gore, the Cubs might not be able to wait until 12/2 to remove Hancock, Webster, and/or T. Davis from the 40. They might need one or more of those roster slots on 11/20.

    i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

    right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

    I'll always remember his 3-0 No-hitter against the Braves when Aaron's HR was blown back into the LF well and BIlly Williams made the catch with his back against the ivy.
