9th Inning Rally & Walk-Off Helps Cubs Sweep Giants at Riverview

Dalton Hurd laced a two-strike opposite-field line drive RBI single to right to tie the game and D. J. Artis followed two batters later with a walk-off game-winning RBI single to CF, as the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Cubs) rallied from a 2-1 deficit entering the bottom of the 9th to edge the Augusta Greenjackets (San Francisco Giants Lo-A affiliate) 3-2 on Field #5, and SP Ryan Williams and four relievers combined to toss a four-hit shutout with ten strikeouts as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-A affiliate) blanked the San Jose Giants (Hi-A affiliate of the Giants) 1-0 on Field #6, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Sunday afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

Very curious to know how Ryan Williams is looking. Seems unlikely he could crack one of the loaded AA or AAA rotations, so where does he go from here if he’s healthy and stretched out to start?

BRADSBEARD: Ryan Williams has been pitching very well so far. He was moved-down to the Tennessee squad from the Iowa group last week, and while he pitched for Myrtle Beach today (Sunday), it remains to be seen if he will be moved to the Myrtle Beach squad or remain with Tennessee (pitchers sometimes move down a level to get work, just like when an MLB SP throws in a Minor League game).

Williams' FB is still only in the mid-80's, but his control is exceptional (he threw an amazing 85% strikes in Sunday's game), and he mixes his pitches (FB, CV, CH) very well to get maximum benefit from his stuff.

The Cubs minor league managers and coaches love Williams because it's like having an extra pitching coach on the team. Many of the younger pitchers gravitate to him and talk to him about pitching, and because he went through a major rehab after undergoing shoulder surgery the rehabbing pitchers go to him for advice as well, so I think the Cubs will do everything they can to keep him in the minor league system, even if it's just the 13th man on the Myrtle Beach staff.

I am hoping for a full recovery and a good season for Carlos Sepulveda..

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
