Lester Goes Six on the Backfields and Ademan Belts Solo HR

Tyler Durna singled twice, doubled, scored a run, knocked-in a run with a sacrifice fly, and stole a base, D. J. Artis reached base three times (a single and two walks) and scored a run, Dalton Hurd smacked an RBI triple and a single and scored a run, Josue Huma ripped a two-run triple, and SP Cam Sanders tossed three innings of no run/no hit ball, leading the South Bend Cubs (Lo-A affiliate of the Cubs) to a 4-1 victory over the Asheville Tourists (Colorado Rockies Lo-A affiliate) on Field #5, and Aramis Ademan belted a HR leading off the bottom of the 1st inning, singled, walked and scored, Miguel Amaya roped an RBI double into the LF corner and scored, Jimmy Herron drilled an RBI single, reached base on an HBP, and stole a base, and Jon Lester hurled six innings (87 pitches) of two-run ball (five hits, two walks, seven strikeouts, and a wild pitch) and combined with Bryan Hudson to fan 13, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Hi-A affiliate) edged the Lancaster JetHawks (Rockies Hi-A affiliate) 3-2 on Field #6, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Monday afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ. 

The rest of the Cubs MLB squad had the day off, but Victor Caratini came over to the Riverview backfields to catch Lester, and he had one AB in each of the first six innings (while he and Lester were in the game), going 1-5 with a double and a walk.  

In Cubs Minor League Camp news, OF Jamie Galazin (Cubs 2018 22nd round draft pick - St. John's) is being converted to a RHP. He was drafted by the Cubs as an outfielder, but he did pitch a bit in college (10 games), so he is at least somewhat familiar with the pitching thing. Whether Galazin will be used strictly as a pitcher or possibly as the now popular "two-way player" remains to be seen, but in either case he will be remaining at Extended Spring Training while he proceeds forward with the mound conversion.

Hey AZPhil,

Why is Jose Gutierrez inactive? As someone who hopes Theo’s Plan includes a dynamic switch hitter or two in The Future, I am rooting for any of these yoots who may end up playing the part (Gutierrez, R. Garcia, J. Huma, Perlaza, F. Mejia). Gutierrez has shown some playmaking ability in the pros on both sides of the ball so I keep him tentatively on radar. It does not seem as if there is much competition with that MB outfield group, Herron being the closest to a prospect and probably not so far ahead. Do you think he ends up with MB to open the season? The SB OF may be tough to get PAs in unless Artis gets promoted fast.

KKvG: Jose Cardona has a right wrist injury and Jesse Hodges has a right shoulder injury, but I don't know what exactly took Jose Gutierrez off the field. Before he went inactive, Gutierrez was squarely in the mix for a spot in the Myrtle Beach outfield. 

Jimmy Herron (who has played all three OF positions this Spring) has definitely been the best OF so far with the MB squad and Zach Davis will probably play LF or CF, but the Cubs moved Nelson Velazquez (one of the Cubs best OF prospects) and Grant Fennell (a LF-1B-3B guy who is a really good hitter) up to MB this week because there is clearly an OF vacuum there, and it's still possible that D. J. Wilson and/or Kevonte Mitchell (especially Mitchell) will return to MB by Opening Day. 

Probably no more than one of Connor Myers, Roberto Caro, and Luis Ayala will get the Tennessee 4th OF slot (all three presently are with the Tennessee squad competing for that spot) with the other two then probably in the competition for the MB 4th OF slot, but if Charcer Burks, Wynton Bernard, and/or Evan Marzilli get moved down to Tennessee from Iowa (which is very possible), there might not be even one slot available for Myers, Caro, or Ayala at Tennessee.  

D. J. Artis is an OBP machine and has been fantastic as the South Bend lead-off hitter and he can play either LF or CF, and Jonathan Sierra is a virtual lock for the SB starting RF gig. Velazquez will certainly be the third SB starting OF if he doesn't remain with MB, and Brandon Hughes or Chris Singleton (both of whom are really struggling at the plate) would probably be the 4th OF at SB, although Dalton Hurd is making a strong bid for that job.  

Although they are the future, Brennen Davis, Cole Roederer, and Edmond Americaan will likely begin the 2019 season at EXST, and both Fernando Kelli and Chris Pieters have had a disappointing Minor League Camp and so I just can't see either of them making the SB Opening Day roster.

As far as the Cubs minor league Opening Day catcher assignments are concerned, I would say it's very likely that we'll see T. Davis and Arcia at Iowa (with Mark Zagunis the "emergency" 3rd catcher), Higgins, Pereda and Rice (who can play 1B when J.Young plays LF) at Tennessee, M. Amaya and M. Cruz at MB, and Soto and Guerra at SB (Jonathan Soto is the Cubs second-best catching prospect behind Miguel Amaya), with Eric Gonzalez the likely other catcher at SB if the Cubs feel Soto needs to move more slowly and begin the season at EXST.  

The Cubs will likely keep one extra catcher on the "phantom IL" at each of the full-season affiliates, probably Eric Castill0 (the best defensive catcher in the system) at Iowa, Will Remillard at Tennessee, Tyler Payne at MB, and Cam Balego at SB, with Rafelin Lorenzo (selected by the Cubs in the AAA Phase of last December's Rule 5 Draft) a "wild card" who could be anywhere from EXST to AA or nowhere.

And as far as the Cubs minor league infielders are concerned, I would say that (barring injuries) we'll probably see Adduci, Giambrone, Short, and Adames 1B-2B-SS-3B at Iowa on Opening Day (with Bote taking over 3B at Iowa when Russell gets reinstated in May), with Chesny Young, Ryan Court, and Philip Evans battling for two back-up spots (don't see a spot for Yasiel Balaguert at Iowa unless he beats-out Adduci for the 1B job or the Cubs go with just one back-up INF), then J. Young, Donahue, Hoerner, and Machin 1B-2B-SS-3B at Tennessee with Robel Garcia, Yeiler Peguero, and Jhonny Bethencourt battling for probably just one back-up INF slot, Filiere, Weber, Ademan and Galindo 1B-2B-SS-3B at MB with Sepulveda a possibility to start at 2B with Weber more of a super-sub and then Bethencourt and Peguero (if they don't make the Tennessee Opening Day roster) and Narea competng for two back-up INF slots at MB (but only one slot if both Sepulveda and Weber are on the MB Opening Day roster), and finally Durna-Upshaw-Vazquez-Reynolds the starters at 1B-2B-SS-3B at SB with Narea (if he doesn't make the MB Opening Day roster), Zinn, Jordan, and/or Daniel the two INF back-ups.

It's possible that Carlos Sepulveda will begin the 2019 season in the Arizona sun at EXST since he missed most of the last two seasons after undergoing shoulder surgery in 2017. 

I think that Christopher Morel (one of the Cubs top prospects) will probably begin the 2019 season at EXST, but he could conceivably crack the SB Opening Day lineup at either SS or 3B. (Luis Vazquez is the best defensive SS in the Cubs system but he has struggled at the plate, and Luke Reynolds has power and draws walks but is a defensive liability at 3B and is better suited at 1B or DH). 

Fidel Mejia (3B-2B-1B) and Yonathan Perlaza (2B-3B) are two other more long-shot type candidates to make the SB Opening Day roster. Both are legit prospects (albeit not as much as C. Morel), but might not be ready for Lo-A just yet.  

So it's quite possible that C. Morel, Perlaza, F. Mejia (plus 2B Reivaj Garcia, who is not even at Minor League Camp) will begin the 2019 season at EXST.

Thanks alot for the rundown. I’d really like to see them take some risks rather than run with retreads . For instance, I’d like to see Soto-Reynolds/Mejia-Perlaza-Vazquez-Morel to be the SB infield for a good chunk of the year or the MB OF to be Wilson/Artis-Gutierrez-Herron to open with Mitchell on the bench. I’d really really like to see one of Davis or Roederer open with SB (personal preference is Davis but only because I like his potential more). 

Understandably that is all wishful thinking as more obviously org guys need work too and not everyone I listed is really a prospect anyway++

    I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

    Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets. 

     

    So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

    One more thing about Edwin Escobar. Even though he had accrued less than one year of MLB Service Time prior to signing with Nippon Ham in 2017 (he ended up eventually with Yokohama), he will have Article XIX-A rights by virtue of the seven seasons he spent in Japan. So he will be essentially locked on the 40-man roster (or at least he can't be outrighted without his consent), and he will be a FA whenever his contract expires.

    Also, Pirates were supposedly in on Escobar, too, so if the Cubs sign him to a minor league contract there is a very good chance that the Pirates will select him in the Rule 5 Draft. So even though it means he would take up a slot on the 40, it better be a major league contract if the Cubs don't want to lose him right after signing him!
