Cubs vs. Angels: Hendricks vs. Stratton (Game 14)

CHC (5-8): RHP Kyle Hendricks (0-2)
LAA (7-7): RHP Chris Stratton (0-1)
First pitch 1:20pmCDT

The Cubs send Kyle Hendricks to the mound for his turn to be good after strong starts from Quintana and Hamels. The righty has lost his first two starts and looked generally out-of-whack. We may see Pujols again; he homered yesterday and Justin Bour is 1-14 against Hendricks. Zack Cozart is 4-12 with a HR against him.

Chris Stratton made 26 starts last year for the Giants, with a 4.43 xFIP and 5.09 ERA. In his first two starts this season, he's struck out only 2 while walking 6 (8.1 IP). The Cubs offense will try to show off their discipline and maybe some more of the power we saw yesterday.

The wind should help left-handed batters today.

Tim Collins looks like a jr. high school student cosplaying as Jake Arrieta.

so close...also, wow ive never seen schwarb so mad.

Not an egregious call by the third base umpire. Schwarbs just feeling the heat of letting his team down again. Willson’s at bat was the killer - strikes two and three swinging at balls out of the strike zone

Also: Cubs did not deserve to win that game. Bullpen is el stinko (4 walks in an inning, two with the bases loaded - you should lose the game on that alone)

Something to keep in mind regarding the Cubs bulllpen...

Brian Duensing and Tim Collins have Article XIX-A rights (both have accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time) and both accepted minor league assignments prior to MLB Opening Day (Duensing accepted an outright assignment and Collins accepted an optional assignment) and so Duensing and Collins likely signed the waiver explained in the next paragraph:

A player with Article XIX-A rights can waive his right to refuse an outright assignment or elect free-agency if outrighted, but the waiver cannot be signed more than ten days prior to MLB Opening Day, the player has the right to designate in advance which minor league team to which he can be assigned, and the waiver automatically expires if the player is not outrighted to the minors within 45 days or by the 45th day of the MLB regular season (whichever is later).

As this might pertain to Collins, the 45th day of the MLB regular season is May 11th.

Sunday's game is postponed due to weather. Cubs miss their chance to seal another series win and Chatwood might be deprived of a start for now. Make-up date tbd.

Monday 8/26 (day game) would seem to be the best common open date, with Cubs home on Sunday and play at NYM on Tuesday, and Angels finish series in HOU on Sunday and begin homestand on Tuesday.

This would cause Cubs to play 15 days in a row (well within reasonable limit) and Angels have off days the previous Thursday and the next Thursday as well.

Good deal - much better ballpark experience than at the Ted. Atlanta fans are buying in and showing up.

It’s a shame that they had to burn Cishek with a five run lead. I guess they could have used Brach or Caratini. Probably not enough time to warm up Caratini. Wouldn’t want to risk blowing the lead with Brach.

gonna be in ATL over the 4th and catching the young braves club in person.  i really don't like going to that park (hey, who wants 3-4 hours of the "tommy hawk chawp"?), but i wanna see this collection of kids.

Kyle Ryan playing like a man who wants to keep his big league roster spot - well done!!

if javy has the ball you gotta play like you're on a basketball court.  until the play is dead, no matter what your view is, that ball could be coming at you at any time from any angle.

bote also goofed earlier in the season playing 3rd during a lester start by not knowing how extreme one needs to cover for him.  yeah, technically it should be lester's play, but realistically the 3rd baseman has more range to cover with lester on the mound.

Barnette’s 88-91 mph fastball really is, uh, not very special.

But for Flowers and the pitchers spot, the Braves lineup is relentless. When McCann plays, the only hole is the pitchers spot. Tough club.

    welcome to the cubs barnette.

6 pitches to his 1st batter, solo HR.

you're gonna fit in just fine.

Thanks Phil. What kind of prospect(s) do you think it would take to pick up Melky?

Not the first time Bote has frozen on a catchable ball from Javy at second ... and leads to two unearned runs. Damn. Love Bote, but when you’re playing with Javy, you better expect the unexpected

    mission accomplished.

also, wow at that 10 mile long leash teheran got to totally suck.

Pro tip to the Cubs: score a ton of runs, then score a ton more. These Braves specialize in pulverizing and bludgeoning teams into oblivion, particularly after the six inning.

    Walnuts suck. Just sayin’

The Cubs have officially signed three more 2019 draft picks: RHP Zach Bryant (15th round - Jacksonville), RHP Johzan Oquendo (16th round - Leadership Christian Academy - Guaynabo, PR), and RHP Shane Combs (31st round - Notre Dame).

So the Cubs have now signed 24 of their 40 draft picks.

ERIC S: Dixon Machado is a glove-first SS (can also play 2B-3B) and a high contact hitter who is starting to show some HR pop. As for a veteran bat who might be available in a trade, OF Melky Cabera (PIT) might be a good target (switch-hitter who can play both OF corners).

while sharing chocolate chip cookie recipies contreras learned that flowers puts walnuts in his recipe and he's just not going to take that crap without speaking up.  he took it a bit too far and said flowers might as well be making oatmeal raisin cookies, so it's all a big mess right now.

also, flowers survived his AB the next inning without incident.
