Cubs vs. Dodgers: Hamels vs. Buehler (Game 22)

CHC (11-10): LHP Cole Hamels (3.0, 2.77 ERA)
LAD (15-10): RHP Walker Buehler (2-0, 5.40 ERA)
First pitch 7:05pmCDT

The Cubs earned an exciting victory in the opener last night. The dominant Quintana showed up again and Javy Baez proved that he can still do whatever the f*** he wants. Tonight the crew gets to work putting .500 further in the rear-view mirror.Cole Hamels, the Cubs best starting pitcher so far, makes his fifth start. He's really been hitting his spots, and the results show it. He's getting a ton of ground balls and has walked only 1.05 per 9 innings. Lefties are 1-21 against him on the year with 6 strikeouts. His career splits are not nearly so drastic. Justin Turner is 6-15 against him with a HR, and Cody Bellinger is 1-1 with a HR and 2 BBs.

Walker Buehler has rode the Dodgers' offense to two wins despite a high ERA. He's alternated between terrible starts and solid starts. It looks like a bad one is up in that rotation. In 2018, he made 23 starts and posted a great 2.62 ERA to go 8-5. Current Cubs have only 9 ABs against him, but they have a collective 1.545 OPS, so, there's that.

The Cubs have won 8 of their last ten and have gained ground in the tight NL central. Baseball feels a whole lot different when your team wins more than they lose, huh?

David Bote reinstated from the Paternity Leave List, and RHP Alec Mills has been optioned to Iowa.

a.russell plays tonight in iowa...and it's getting a rather cold reception on social media.

in the park he got a big cheering welcome because he's a hero or something.  welcome back.  hope you didn't hurt your throwing hand on your wife's face, bro.  you need that to do baseball for the pleasure of the fans.

baez!!!!

hell of a game so far.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
