Cubs @ Diamondbacks: Hendricks vs. Ray (Game 24)

CHC (12-11): RHP Kyle Hendricks (1-3, 3.54 ERA)
ARZ (15-11): LHP Robbie Ray (0-1, 3.95 ERA)
First pitch 8:40pmCDT

It's a rematch, following the Cubs 2-1 series win at Wrigley this past weekend. Hendricks got his first win in that series, going 7 IP with 11 strikeouts and generally looking like he'd figured some things out. He allowed only 5 baserunners an was backed by the Cubs offense for 5 runs to beat Merrill Kelly.Robbie Ray pitched a shortly thereafter but was out-dueled by Tyler Chatwood(!). Ray held the Cubs to 1 run in 6 innings on 4 hits and a 1 walk. The Cubs squeaked out the win thanks to Baez's aggressive baserunning and David Bote's 9th-inning magic.

The Cubs' offense couldn't back a solid pitching performance yesterday. Arizona is reputed not to be the bandbox that it once was, but the Cubs offense has OPS-ed .851 on the road compared to .711 at home. On the other hand, Cubs' pitching clearly has preferred home cooking. They've been top 3 at home by most measures and in the bottom 3rd on the road. I propose that position players steal some hotel soaps and towels and that the pitchers bring their familiar toilet seats on the road. It can't hurt.

It will be Darvish vs. Godley on Saturday and Quintana vs. Weaver for the Sunday matinee.

LHRP Randy Rosario has been optioned to AAA Iowa, which means one of the rehabbing pitchers (Montgomery, Cedeno, or Barnette) will likely be reinstated from the IL prior to tonight's game in Phoenix.

Cubs have recalled RHRP Dillon Maples from AAA Iowa (he replaces Randy Rosario on the 25).

AZ Phil and Mrs. AZ Phil will be at tonight's Cubs - D'backs game at Chase Field. Please feel free to stop by and say hello. We will be the ones wearing Cubs hats.

It's not an Extended Spring Training game, but I guess it will have to do.

almora/bryant(LF)/rizzo/baez/contreras/bote(3rd)/zobrist(2nd)/zaguinus/hendricks

zag finally gets another start.  nice.

watching the TOR broadcast waiting for the late game...they are vlad jr crazy tonight.  he picked up a lazy foul ball grounder in very ordinary manner in the top 2nd for his 1st "play" of the game and got a cheer/ovation.  his 1st AB coming up soon...

HUGE full-park standing O as he walks to the plate.  vlad sr is bursting with pride.  "vladdy" chant going big...

...and he grounds out...and gets a standing O.

if he hits a homer tonight the rogers center might collapse.

damn...2nd AB he missed a homer by a few feet on a leaping catch in LF.  he got crazy lift on that considering he hit it pulled off the end of the bat.  that 80 hit tool with power could be scary stuff when he matures.

d.maples walks 2 guys to lead off the inning, then Ks 3 in a row...that is peak dylan maples.

welcome back discount bin carlos marmol.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
