Cubs @ Mariners: Lester vs. Gonzales (Game 28)

CHC (15-12): LHP Jon Lester (1-1, 2.37 ERA)
SEA (18-14): LHP Marco Gonzales (5-0, 2.80 ERA)
First pitch 5:40pmCDT

After taking the back-and-forth game one, the Cubs go for a sweep of the short series today. Jon Lester will make his second start coming off of the IL. He showed no signs of rust on 4/25 when he went five innings allowing only one earned run. The veterans Encarnacion and Bruce have faced him in 73 total ABs. Bruce should get the day off, having gone 3-26 against the lefty. Encarnacion is 10-47 but has 3 HRs.

Marco Gonzales takes the ball for the Mariners. He bounced back and forth between the majors and minors with the redbirds before breaking out with the Mariners last year, when he added a cutter to his mix. He doesn't overpower hitters, but that cutter has been a difference maker and seems to have set hitters up for the changeup as well. He's also very stingy with walks. Only Javier Baez (0-3) has faced him. Kris Bryant is 4-20 over his last 4 games, but he's also been hitting the ball hard (2 2B and 2 HR) and has only struck out 3 times.

After going 1 for their first 7 games, the Cubs went 14-6 to finish out April. During that stretch they scored 5.15 runs per game and allowed 3.15 runs per game. I would say they looked more like the team we expected them to be, but I honestly didn't expect the pitching to be this good.

almora/bryant(DH)/rizzo/baez/contreras/schwarber/bote/heyward/zobrist (vs lefty pitcher)

zag's had a total of 10 PA in the past 2.5 weeks.

this game is neat-o.

the top of the 2nd is rad.

I work in Illinois with a Mariners fan.  This has not been much fun for him.

7ip 1h 1bb 8k, 0r/er...97 pitches

that's some quality lester...

3 hit night for heyward.  he's playing like he wants to go to another all-star game in his career.

maples Ks the side without putting a man on...cubs 4 games over .500

off day tomorrow, STL series starts early friday afternoon.

That Contreras homerun was ridiculous. Off the bat, I thought it was a line shot into the corner, but it ended up decapitating someone in the upper deck.

It is sure fun to watch Maple when he is on.

He certainly can buckle a lot of knees, but I’m surprised anyone ever swings.

    Last 30 games ERA: 5.47

    Last 15 games ERA: 6.08

    Last 7 games ERA: 9.45

To quote Herb Brooks, "You're playing worse every day and right now you're playing like it's next month."

contreras expected to be activated Wednesday.

also, this is one hell of a slow trade market with the deadline 8 days away.

Further losses and probably some of the recent ones Strop has coughed up too. It’s very frustrating there’s no talk of moving him down the relief depth chart too. Just “he’ll figure it out and get himself right.” I don’t think so, Joe!

Yes, yes, and yes.  Except for the very best in the game, relievers have the most variability in performance from year to year.  Kintzler was horrible last year, and is very very good in 2019.  Strop was good last year, this year his 5.47 ERA has been well earned.

This problem has a simple solution of Cishek-Kintzler-Kimbrell for the 7th-8th-9th.  Any further losses due to Strop in the 8th are on Joe.

    We’re nearing August and Strop’s ERA is a tick under 5.50 - #notafluke

I had to ditch this one after the 7th to get some sleep, and, boy--right choice.

To everyone in Cub nation except the folks that matter. Exasperating.

I think its  past time where Strop shouldn’t be the 8th inning guy anymore....

Brach in during a one run game where the ball seems to be flying out of the park? I too like to live dangerously.

RHP Aneuris Rosario (2014 IFA - Dominican Republic) has been reinstated from the Disqualified List. Now 24, Rosario spent four seasons in the DSL (2014-17) and was the one-time closer for DSL Cubs #1. He hasn't pitched since 2017.

Last hurrah as a starter before the Cubs trade for an outfielder who gets on base?

i wonder why almora's started almost every game the past week+, especially since he's sucked at it...and he even got to hit leadoff for a game or 2.

Oof. Almora and Maldonado as starters is going to be rough on the offense. Better hope for at least a Garcia triple.

    schwarber / baez / bryant / rizzo / garcia(2nd) / heyward / almora / maldo / a.mills

ham gets a AAA rehab start tomorrow.  also, i could do with less almora.
