Cubs @ Reds: Quintana vs. Castillo (Game 41)

CHC (25-15): LHP José Quintana (4-2, 3.50 ERA)
CIN (19-24): RHP Luis Castillo (4-1, 1.76 ERA)
First pitch 5:40pmCDT

Quintana looks to pick up the Cubs after last night's extra-inning loss. His first start of the year remains his lone disappointing appearance of 2019 to date. Outside of that April 5 loss to Milwaukee, he hasn't allowed more than 3 runs in a start. He's also been effective at keeping the ball on the ground, a healthy strategy for anyone pitching in the Great American Bandbox. Joey Votto is 7-14 in his career against Quintana.Luis Castillo has looked like an ace in the early going. In addition to striking out well over a batter per inning, he's getting ground balls at a frightening 59.3% rate. There are still walks available for more discerning batters. Last time out he pitched 6 innings of scoreless ball and allowed only two hits, but he also put five runners on via the walk. Daniel Descalso is 4-10 with 2 HR and Kyle Schwarber is 3-6 with 2 HR. Castillo's changeup is much improved in 2019, but lefties have still fared much better than righties against him. Rizzo, 2-12 with 3 strikeouts, should continue to rest his back anyway.

So facing Castillo tonight, followed by Scherzer, then Strasburg. Pretty good (or unlucky) run of high quality opposing pitchers this week

Cubs reinstate Victor Caratini from 10-day IL and Taylor Davis has been optioned to Iowa.

what crackhead put today's lineup together?

rizzo supposedly due back saturday "at the latest"

i miss "good heyward"

that was fun for a few weeks.  he hit homers, and got some singles, and hella walks...

come back, dude.

okay, i'm done with t.chatwood.

sigh.  hope he can turn things around...no one's gonna want this contract even at a discount unless he can show some stabilty.

he gave up 3 singles in a row to start the 7th.  he gave up 2 walks in a row in the 6th.

he only had 1 run scored on him, thankfully, but that 2ip 5h 2bb 1k wasn't pretty.

he's had a semi-decent run recently that made him look like more than a waste of roster space...only 1 bad outing in early may...a great one the last time out before last night.  last night he looked very vulnerable.

he's also throwing almost nothing but fastballs lately.  i dunno if that is a good long-term plan when everyone knows they're gonna get a steady diet of fastballs.  he doesn't even trust his cutter anymore it seems.

Phil: Great to see what Rosario is doing!

Do you think having Rosario may have influenced/impacted the front office's decision on including Hope in the trade for Busch at all?

it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

a notion left long in the past, unearthed, polished for modern audiences and popular as ever.

No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song.

In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.

Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

ooof...this is just as likely as anything.  professional organists are weird humans.

Maybe it is only played when the hitter thus far in the game is "oh for two"-na at the plate?

who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.
