Giant Orange No Match for Cubs at Riverview

D. J. Wilson belted a two-run triple, walked twice, and scored a run, Luis Verdugo drilled two RBI singles, Carlos Morfa smacked a solo HR and singled, and SP Erich Uelmen hurled four innings of one-run ball, leading the Cubs "B" team to an 8-3 victory over the Giants Orange squad in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday morning on Field #5 at the Riverview Baseball Complex on John Arguello Way in Mesa, AZ.

So is DJ Wilson just trying to revamp his swing or something? He’s appears to be healthy at this point and knocking EXST pitching around.

BRADSBEARD: D. J. Wilson was so lost at the plate at Myrtle Beach this season (and even last season as well) that it was either EXST or get released. Not that it was his choice (because it wasn't), but the Cubs apparently felt that if he could maybe get hot at EXST (which he is now) it might possibly help him get going at Myrtle Beach once he's back there. We'll see. 

BTW, the Cubs did the same thing with Wladimir Galindo last month (he was demoted to EXST after struggling at Myrtle Beach for the second season in a row), and while he hit three HR at EXST and made hard contact, it hasn't carried-over since he returned to MB last week (1-12 with six K). 

The thing is, Wilson was the Cubs 4th round draft pick in 2015 ($1.3M signing bonus) and was a Cubs Top 15 prospect as recently as post-2017 and he is an outstanding defensive CF and base-runner and Galindo was a Cubs Top 20 prospect as recently as post-2016 and he has as much HR power as any hitter in the system, so the Cubs are going to give them both every oppportunity to master Hi-A before cutting them loose. 

But time is running short for both of them.

cubs have claimed chandler shepherd off waivers from the redsox...because claiming redsox players is what they do.

26 year old with a 10.01.era in AAA.  29.2ip 53h (yes, 53) 16bb 30k, 11hr (yes, 11)

Just as a point of information, waiver claim priority is based upon aggregate MLB standings on the day the waiver claiming period ends for the player (which league doesn't matter), which is why the Cubs had the #26 waiver claim priority for Shepherd. In other words, the Dodgers were - NOT - the only other team after the Cubs. The aggregate MLB standings as of 9 AM (Eastern) on Saturday 5/18 were used to determine the waiver claim priority with respect to Shepherd, and because the the Rays, Dodgers, Twins, and Astros had better records than the Cubs at that time, those four clubs had a worse waiver claim priority than the Cubs.     

It used to be for Optional Assignment Waivers (which were eliminated in 2017) and Trade Assignment Waivers (which have been eliminated ths season) -- and - ONLY - for those types of waivers -- the clubs in the player's own league had waiver claim priority over all of the clubs in the other league if more than one club claimed the player. So the player would have to be "waived out of his own league" (so to speak) before a club in the other league would have a waiver claim priority in the case of Optional Assignment Waivers and Trade Assignment Waivers. But that type of waiver claim priority is no longer used because Optional Assignment Waivers and Trade Assignment Waivers no longer exist.  

In the case of Outright Assignment Waivers and Outright Release Waivers (the only two types of waivers still in existence), the aggregate MLB standings are used to determine waiver claim priority. It's similar to how draft order is determined with respect to the MLB Rule 4 Draft (First-Year Player Draft) in June and the MLB Rule 5 Draft in December. Individual league standings don't matter.

    cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

    taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

    p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.

    Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

    I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."  

    Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

    Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

    Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
    -give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

    -Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

    Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

    I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

    I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?
