Cubs vs. Phillies: Quintana vs. Eflin (Game 46)

CHC (27-18): LHP José Quintana (4-3, 3.68 ERA)
PHL (28-19): RHP Zach Eflin (5-4, 2.89 ERA)
First pitch 6:05pmCDT

After dropping the series opener in the 10th, the Cubs send José Quintana to the mound against the Phillies' best starter. Quintana has given up 2 or 3 runs in each of his last 5 starts and has seen his strikeout rate drop from the early going. He's been steady but not great during that time. Former Pirates McCutchen and Sean Rodriguez are a collective 9-23 with 1 homerun off of him. Last night's Phillies hero, Hernandez, is 3-7 with a double, a triple, and two walks.Zach Eflin has been the best Phillies starter in the early going. He's succeeded by keeping his walks way down and ... *shrugs* posting a high left-on-base percentage? Although Eflin works in the mid-90s with his fastball, he's mostly a pitch-to-contact type. He's using his slider more and to good effect in the early going. He allowed 4 earned runs on 7 hits and two walks in his last start, against the Brewers. Bryant is 6-10 off of him. Current Cubs have yet to hit a homerun against Eflin.

It's forecast to be a cold, windy game, with the wind killing fly balls hit toward right.

I had a good chuckle listening to the espn crew question the decision of pinch hitting a cold off the bench Javy for a veteran left handed hitter like Descalso - that discussion became moot pretty quick!

So many good things about the bottom of the ninth. Even Willson‘s at bat - though it didn’t result in a run - was a quality, grinding at bat after falling behind 0-2. Didn’t fall for the outside slider cheese as he’d done in similar situations before.

CUBS WIN!!!!

javy takes the 1st pitch he sees down the 1st base line into the outfield...no chance.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
