Cubs vs. Phillies: Hamels vs. Irvin (Game 47)

CHC (28-18): LHP Cole Hamels (4-0, 3.13 ERA)
PHL (28-20): LHP Cole Irvin (2-0, 2.77 ERA)
First pitch 7:05pmCDT

The Cubs walked off to even the series and now send Cole Hamels to take on his former team in a battle of two guys named "Cole." Hamels has been working through some off-and-on command issues since late April but has managed to suppress run scoring and remain undefeated on the season anyway. Last time out he was limited to 5 innings but picked up his 4th win against the Nationals. He's held Bryce Harper to a .660 OPS in 34 ABs. Many of the other Phillies are getting their first look at him from the batter's box.

Cole Irvin is a lot like Hamels in that they have the same first name, they're both left-handed, and they are both undefeated. That's probably about it. A quick look at his minor league stats tells me his strength is command and he isn't going to miss a ton of bats. He's got a slider and a changeup to go with a high 80's-ish fastball. Every Cub will be facing him for the first time.

The forecast says there's rain coming late tonight, but it shouldn't get too heavy until very late in the game. It should warm up in Chicago today with wind coming out of the south (i.e. out to left-center). Here's hoping that wind carries away Irvin's respectable ERA. Don't be surprised if Javy's heel is feeling much better.

I'm bummed to be blacked out for this one. I'm forecasting a drubbing.

Not that it's going to happen, but RHRP Tony Barnette is eligible to be reinstated from the Cubs MLB 60-day IL tomorrow (Thursday).

If the Cubs make any changes in the bullpen this week, I think Junichi Tazawa replacing Xaver Cedeno (likely DFA candidate) would be it.

It doesn't seem like Maddon has much confidence in Cedeno (and rightfully so), and Tazawa's splitter plays up vs LH hitters (when he's not hanging it).

AZ Phil - Close here, but Cedeno to the IL with a “wrist injury“. Instead of Tazawa, the roulette wheel ball falls on righty reliever Rowan Wick being called up from AAA (not sure what he offers against lefties though).

Blue Jays scout following Cubs at EXST so there probably are other Toronto scouts on the other Cubs affiliates as well. If a deal were to happen, Jays closer Ken Giles is probable Cub target. (Giles is under club control via arbitration through 2020).

What do you think he will cost?

schwarber / bryant(RF) / rizzo / baez / contreras / almora / russell(2nd) / bote(3rd) / ham

The Baltimore Orioles have claimed RHP Chandler Shepherd off waivers from the Cubs, as the Cubs tried (and failed) to outright Shepherd to the minors after claiming him off waivers from the Red Sox last Saturday.

rizzoh!!

ALMORA GRAND SLAM!!!

way to break a tie.

Chatwood is becoming a force in the BP.

it had to feel good for him to get that standing O at the home ballpark.

he's still throwing almost nothing but fastballs exclusively, though...wonder what's up with that.

Control problems?

he's thrown so little of his other stuff lately that i can't even guess and sure don't know.

he's always been fastball-heavy, but it's almost exclusively fastball now.

he gets movement on a 95-97mph fastball...that's a positive about it if he's gonna continously offer it up.

I would absolutely accept that scenario, including the line for Chatwood (provide there's no homerun mixed in there).

    kinda neat...

"Per ESPN.com's Jeff Passan, Major League Baseball's executive council has granted the Rays permission to explore a plan that would allow them to start the season playing home games in Tampa Bay and finish their home schedule in Montreal. "

Chatwood announced as starter for tonight, but since Alzolay was scheduled to go for Iowa today I don't think it's a fluke he was called up.  He could piggyback nicely after Chatwood throws 96 pitches in 4 innings with 9 Ks and 5 walks.

The Cubs could give Alzolay three starts (6/20 vs NYM, 6/25 vs ATL, and 6/30 at CIN), then option him to the minors on 7/1 when (presumably) Craig Kimbrel and Tony Barnette are brought up, then leave Alzolay at Iowa for 14 days through the All-Star Break, and recall him to start the game on 7/15 or 7/16 vs CIN (if Hendricks isn't ready to come off the IL after the ASB).

The thing about Tim Collins is that because he has Article XIX-A rights (he has accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time), he must give his consent each time he is optioned or outrighted to the minors, and while he obviously did give his consent when he was optioned to the minors after being signed in March and then again in April and again in May after brief call-ups to MLB, he is no longer willing to do it, and so to get him off the 25-man roster, the Cubs have no choice but to release him (if he isn't traded or claimed off waivers sometime in the next seven days).

Ozzie Albies routinely loses his helmet while running the bases - his helmet even has a parody twitter account.

    cubs win!

MIL lost, so the cubs are in 1st by a half game.

The Cubs have released LHRP Brian Duensing.

Duensing was sent outright to AAA Iowa at the end of Spring Training (because he has Article XIX-A rights Duensing had to consent to the assignment), and was placed on the I-Cubs 7-day IL on May 12th.

So the Cubs are on the hook for Duensing's entire $3.5M salary, unless he signs a major league contract with another club (not too likely).

The Cubs have signed second-contract FA RHRP Willians Vasquez to a minor league contract and he has been assigned to DSL Cubs #2.

Now 22, W. Vasquez was signed by the Atlanta Braves as an 18-year old J-2 IFA out of Venezuela in 2015, and he spent three seasons in the DSL prior to being released by the Braves this past February.

lester goes 5.2ip and gives up 3 runs.  it wasn't pretty, but it wasn't ugly.

...and a solo HR.  all 5 RBIs belong to him after 3 innings.
