Cubs Walk on the Wild Side at Riverview

Eddy Julio Martinez blasted a two-run HR and a triple (near-HR), and while the Cubs "A" team collected only four hits in the game (the EJM HR and triple and a couple of singles that didn't factor in the scoring), they drew 13 walks plus two HBP and stole six bases, edging the Athletics Green squad 4-3 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training Memorial Day game action Monday morning on Field #1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Comments

azbobbop: Eddy Julio Martinez will show flashes of his five-tool skillset but then he tends to go into a prolonged malaise.

Martinez was signed by the Cubs for $3M in 2015 (and the Cubs had to pay a 100% tax on the signing so it really cost the Cubs $6M). He was a member of the Cuban U16 Junior National Team and played in Serie Nacional (the Cuban major league) as a teenager prior to signing with the Cubs, and was (at the time he signed) considered a possible future MLB CF.

Mainly (right now) he needs to get healthy and get back to AA and master AA and then get to AAA in 2020. He's under club control through the 2022 season so it's not like his time is running out, but he is 24 years old and still in AA so there needs to be more urgency in his game.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
