Cubs @ Astros: Hendricks vs. Miley (Game 53)

CHC (30-23): RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-4, 3.34 ERA)
HOU (37-19): LHP Wade Miley (5-2, 3.32 ERA)
First pitch 7:10pmCDT

Kyle Hendricks starts and plays the role of stopper in the series finale against the former division rivals. After three dominant starts, Hendricks has gone 1-0 in his last two, allowing 7 earned runs but also striking out 13 in 11.2 innings pitched against the Nationals and the Reds. Only Chirinos and Diaz (currently on the IL) have faced him. Chirinos is 0-2. These replacement Astros have been more than the Cubs could handle in the first two games. So, watch out for Some Dude.Wade Miley has been solid for the Astros in 11 starts after signing a one-year contract with Houston this offseason. He's doing his usual thing, getting groundouts and keeping the walks reasonable. He pitched six innings allowing one run and striking out eight last time against the Red Sox. He hasn't pitched a really bad start yet in 2019, but he's given up at least one run in 10 out of his 11 starts. Almora is 3-7 with a HR off of him, but the streaking Rizzo is 2-20. Kris Bryant is 5-11 and there was some talk that he might be back for today's game.

The Cubs have been hitting a ton of homeruns lately, adding five more yesterday, and I don't see any reason to discuss any other aspects of recent games! Dingers, huzzah!

KB back in the lineup (as DH), Descalso out of it. Positive development.

Here’s hoping a Cubs starting pitcher doesn’t suck tonight.

schwarber / bryant(DH) / rizzo / baez(3rd) / contreras / almora / heyward / russell(SS) / bote(2nd)

baez at 3rd...alright, then.

it would be nice to not lose another one to the banged up astros b-team.

fan hit by a foul ball...almora is visibly shaken and the announce crew is practically silent.

cubs win!  great pitching.

MIL had a day off and STL is currently getting the holy hell stomped out of them.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
