Cubs vs. Angels: Lester vs. Bedrosian/Cahill (Game 58)

CHC (31-26): LHP Jon Lester (3-4, 3.59 ERA)
LAA (29-30): RHP Cam Bedrosian (2-3, 3.08 ERA) / RHP Trevor Cahill (2-5, 6.92 ERA)
First pitch 3:05pmCDT

The Cubs just finished a series which I seem to have blacked out. Weird. Instead of the scheduled off-day, they play a make-up game against the Angels back at Wrigley. Jon Lester takes the mound with an ERA inflated following three rough starts. Last time out he allowed a season-high seven earned runs to the Astros. He allowed three walks and eight hits in 5.1 innings pitched. I don't think anyone expected him to go undefeated with a sub-2 ERA on the season, but the three-game implosion has been hard to explain. He's held Mike Trout to 2-14 with five strikeouts.

Having established himself out of the Angels bullpen 2016-2017, Cam Bedrosian has been used as a sort of opener four times in 2019. That is, he's "started" four games, going one inning in each of those appearances. His last of such appearances was May 28, when he gave up a solo homerun. Nick Tropeano worked 5 innings in that game. Trevor Cahill is setup to pitch the most innings in this game. You remember him. He was solid for the Angles last season, but things have not gone well in 2019. He was not good in hist last start: six earned runs, including two homers, in 4.1 IP to the Athletics. He's allowed 2.7 homeruns per nine innings this year. Heyward is 5-10 off of him with a homerun, and he's homered 3 times in his last 7 games. Most current Cubs have never faced him.

The Angels come into town with Mike Trout this time, and Ohtani available in the pinch. Upton, Cozart, and Simmons are all on the IL.

Thanks CHARLIE!

Rumors are pointing to Car-Go joining the Big Club for today;s game.

I think of some "retreads" that have been good (Edmunds), and some bad (Fred McGriff), so ya can't tell until the Car(Go) is driven around a bit.

Heaven knows the Cubs can need help.

The 2008 Edmonds success was such a fascinating smoke and mirrors thing. So many homers chipped into the basket in left-center.

his swing is so slow this season.  it was slow last season, too, but it got a bit worse this year.

that's not everything to a batting game, but i dunno what he's got left to give on the MLB level.

the cost/risk is almost nothing, so whatever.

Cargo is up and playing RF and batting #5. Adduci is DFA.

schwarber / bryant (totally not baez) / rizzo / baez(SS) / cargo(RF) / contreras / heyward / russell / lester

Baez goes for the ultimate "Double Golden Sombrero"!!!

ha, mistake fixed.

Free, but blacked out in Southern California.

one day blackout restrictions will go away.  i'm beyond ready.

Everything starts and ends with Javy now.  Never thought I would ever be saying that.

The team is 4-9 (or maybe 4-10) since his heel injury - a game I just hapened to be at.

They got nothin' right now.

the slow-running .313 ob% out of the leadoff spot schwarber will turn it around any game now...or they can just slot cargo in...or bat the pitcher 1st...

this game is good.

OH SHI....CARGO.

who needs heyward?

With Heyward in center and Cargo in right, they can replace Almora's righty bat with a lefty and not lose much defensively.

The Cubs always factor in defense, which I appreciate.

Need more games like this one - past couple weeks have been a slog.

still waiting for rich hill to happen over here...i promise to be totally not impressed or happy about it.  not a tj guy, but he's injured as hell and not expected to show up until mid-season at best.

whoever they pick to give a few million dollars over a couple seasons to not pitch for the cubs in any of them, i welcome them.

on a serious tip, there are rumors of a minor league deal for b.morrow.

So who is left in the free Agent market that has had Tommy John surgery?  That seems to be a Prerequisite for Theo.  Cotton and Winkler both did adding to all the other signings of Theo.  I would love to see how many people Theo has signed or drafted who has had TJS.

I hope "isn't happening" was more like, "we'd love to continue to discuss this soon"--after extensions/trades of younger players are a bit more sorted.

If only they had revenue from having recently won the World Series and a string of playoff appearances along with a new TV contract! Then they could really spend.

i wish this team was owned by billionaires rather than these...oh, nevermind.

Apparently Cubs were approached by Rizzo's agent about an extension. They told him it wasn't happening.

Cubs organization is performing a master class in how to burn good will among fans!

jdlym: The contract Brad Brach signed with the Mets includes a $850K base salary for 2020, a $1.25M club option for 2021, $400K in potential performance bonuses in 2020, potentially $2.25M in 2021 salary accelerators, and $500K in potential performance bonuses in 2021, so ordinarily the Cubs salary obligation to Brach would be the difference between Brach's new 2020 base salary ($850K) and what would have been his 2020 player option salary ($1.35M) if he hadn't been released by the Cubs.

Hey AZPhil, when a player is released with money/years still remaining on his contract, does his next team *have* to give him the prorated major league minimum or can they offer more (meaning the original club owes less) to "outbid" other teams that may have had interest? I'm assuming that's what happened with Brad Brach, where the Mets signed him for 2020 at $850,000.

as awesome as bryant is, it would probably be good for the cubs to find him a new home before his play at 3rd turns him into a corner OF'r...which seems inevitable sooner than later.

i'm still impressed how much his D improved since he was drafted, but he's already losing a step at the position early in his career.

minor league ballplayers will no longer have to worry about getting suspended for testing positive for weed...it's off the prohibited substances list.

    about time.

3B Alec Bohm and RHSP Spencer Howard would likely be the Cubs asking price and the Phils probably say no, but if they don't say no, that could be a deal.
