Cubs vs. Rockies: Quintana vs. Lambert (Game 61)

CHC (34-26): LHP José Quintana (4-4, 3.78 ERA)
COL (31-29): RHP Peter Lambert (0-0, -.-- ERA)
First pitch 1:20pmCDT

The Cubs are back in first and rely on Quintana to push them toward the sweep this afternoon. José pitched only 4 innings his last start due to rain. He was getting somewhat mixed results up to that point, allowing 2 earned runs but also striking out six. A few current Rockies have enjoyed their few opportunities against him. Arenado has a pair of homeruns in 9 at bats. Mark Reynolds has four extra base hits but also six strikeouts in 17 at bats. Story is 3-5 with a double and a triple. The Cubs miss Jon Gray, day-to-day with a finger injury, and instead get Rockies' top pitching prospect Peter Lambert. Lambert made steady progress through the minors by filling up the strikezone and getting groundballs at a good rate. His ERA's haven't been impressive, but that's a game that may play better with defenders like Arenado and Story behind him. In just over 100 innings at AAA this year and last he's failed to get his ERA below 5. Based on prospect write-ups, it sounds like his stuff is middling. His fastball sits in the low 90s. Command of his changeup makes it his next best pitch. There's enough deception in his delivery that we might see some hitters struggle in the first approach.

Following today's finale, the Cubs will welcome the redbirds into Wrigely with a little payback in mind.

a mostly not-drunk jeff garlin in the booth.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay less annoying than last time.

Yippee for the Cubs offense against minor league pitchers they've never seen before...

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
