Cubs vs. Pirates: Hendricks vs. Musgrove (Game 86)

CHC (45-40): RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-5, 3.36 ERA)
PIT (40-43): RHP Joe Musgrove (6-7, 4.27 ERA)
First pitch 6:05pmCDT

Kyle Hendricks returns from his IL stint just in time to help the bullpen recover from yesterday's blowout loss. Hendrick's last start was probably his second worst of the season, and the news of his shoulder impingement followed hot on the heels of that loss to the Dodgers. Current Pirates are 35-147 against him with a collective .650 OPS. Polanco, 10-28 with two homeruns, is on the IL for this series. Joe Musgrove is 1-1 vs. the Prof.

Musgrove has built on last year's success with more of the same, getting ground balls and keeping his walks low. His fastball velocity is down a touch this year, but he's been just as effective. As a group, the Cubs are only 15-83 off of him with a .522 OPS. Rizzo is 0-10 and Javy 1-12. Descalso is 3-7. In both his career and this season, lefties have had much better success off of Musgrove.

Amaya, Almora/Happ, Zagunis & an A pitcher for Merrifield...

I don’t think that’s even close. I think to even get KC’s attention, the dialogue starts with Amaya and Alzolay.

schwarber / bryant / rizzo / baez / contreras / heyward / almora / russell / hendricks

Sweet victory: only one run scored by the Buccos in the first inning. No doubles. No home runs. Progress!

top of the 4th...tarp on the field.

sigh.

DFA the entire pen.

The guy who got the game 7 save looks an awful lot like a DFA candidate these days

Looks like Maddon’s pregame players meeting has straightened the ship.

la stella had to be helped off the field after fouling one off his leg.

that would be some cruel stuff if he couldn't play in the all-star game.

PHIL- Did we ever find out who the 3 PTBNL were in the Drew Smyly trade or did that just become cash or the PTBNL is the PTBNL is the PTBNL

cubbies.4ever: No PTBNLs were named by the six month deadline, so it was an automatic cash substitution ($50,000) for both clubs.

ha.  also, this reminds me that Grand Slam cereal existed in the late 90s.  it was basically Kix with the marshmallows from Lucky Charms (in baseball items shape).  it was actually really good.

Yeah, both of those guys have some versatility. Could make a nice platoon if it ever came to that.

    Rooting for General Mills?

I like that they're trying Robel and Giambrone all over the diamond.

I'll just be here salivating over the possibility of observing a sub-70MPH curve ball. :)

Rooting for Mills in general. Seems like fun as a 5th starter.

Love those breakdowns Phil - thank you!

People tweeted about watching the Cubs game live here yesterday: http://yoursports.stream/mlb?v=MTQ5NzY2MDMw Might work for anyone on here who can't seem to get the game today.

strong agreement on the mess t.olson was throwing.  he didn't even look happy with himself out there.

I know most of you saw the game or will be seeing the game, but for anyone else who might be interested, here are the Cubs pitchers velo readings from Saturday night's game:

    Alec Mills:
    FB: 90-92
    CH: 82-83
    SL: 80-81
    CV: 68
NOTES: Nice mix of pitches... Mills obviously comes from the "I'm a pitcher not a thrower" school, all of which means command & control matters a lot and he had both tonight... a legit candidate for the Cubs #5 SP slot...

hell of a 1st game.  even the good and bad mean nothing this early in spring, but it was a nice one.  i'm not worried about rizzo misplaying a couple balls in the first innings, nor do i think bote is on his way to a batting title.  spring is meaningless enough without trying to read into february spring games.  it was a fun watch, though.

my biggest regret is not seeing souza chase down any plays in LF while he was in the game.  that's something i really would like to see this early in spring.

I also hope they edit it for the season. doesn't list pitcher or hitter or pitches thrown.
