Cubs @ White Sox: Series Thread (Games 89 and 90)

The Cubs offense put up eleven runs, Quintana went seven innings for the win, Joe Maddon got himself tossed, and Robel Garcia was a double short of the cycle in first MLB start. Lucky for the Cubs, they won't need to top that performance to send fans to the All-Star break happy--a couple of wins would do! The Cubs split a two-game set at Wrigley with the Sox last month. Since their last matchup, the White Sox have not significantly improved. The Cubs, on the other hand, have had the 8th worst ERA- in those few weeks--just ahead of the White Sox at 9th. See the matchups below.

Game 89, Saturday, July 7, first pitch 6:15pmCDT
CHC: LHP Jon Lester (7-6, 3.89 ERA)
CHW: RHP Lucas Giolito (11-2, 2.72 ERA)

Lester earned a win over Giolito on June 19. In two starts since then, Lester has gone 1-1 allowing 6 runs, only three earned, over 11.2 innings. He struck out 15 in that time. The White Sox have a slightly below average offense overall, but they are 9th in the majors in wRC+ against lefties. Jose Abreu is 6-18 with a homerun off of him.

Giolito has gone 1-0 in two starts since being served his second 2019 loss by the Cubs. He allowed three earned runs in 10.2 innings of work, striking out 11. The Cubs are ninth in the majors with a 106 wRC+ against righties. Contreras is 2-7 with two homeruns off of him. Bote is 2-5 and Javy 3-8, each with a homer of their own. Bryant is 1-9 with four strikeouts.

Game 90, Sunday, July 8, first pitch 1:10pmCDT
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-6, 3.45 ERA)
CHW: RHP Ivan Nova (3-7, 5.92 ERA)

Hendricks's last start was shortened by rain, but he appeared to be healthy after missing two weeks with shoulder impingement. He allowed two earned runs and struck out four in three innings, getting pinned with the loss. Jose Abreu is 6-12 off of him and Yolmer Sanchez is 5-11.

Ivan Nova was effective against the Cubs last month, going five innings and allowing one earned run to earn the win. Since then, he went back to the suffering that has been characteristic of his 2019; he lost both starts, allowing nine runs, seven earned, in twelve innings. Willson is 5-11 off of him, Heyward is is 9-24 with a homerun, and Schwarber is 4-16 with two homeruns and three walks.

This Friday off-day is freaking me out... not natural.  I'm glad that the MLB schedule makers in their inifnite wisdom crammed more games into Sept & NOT on the day that 1/2 of America is taking off work... three days before the all-star break. On the plus side, the weird off day, 2 game "road trip", & post ASB homestand means that the Cubs will get more than two weeks in their own beds in the middle of the season.

Don't look now, but the I-Cubs have an 11-game divisonal lead & the Memphis branch of Redbirds is in the basement after last night's walkoff win in front of a capacity holiday crowd that included presidential wannabes Biden & Beto. Last year the I-Cubs went 0-8 @ home vs. Memphis & 2-14 overall.

    it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

    No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

    The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

    RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

    Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song. 

     

    In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.   

     

    Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

    who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

    while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.

    in 2016 hendricks threw 190 innings for 45 earned runs.

    in the shortened 2020 season hendricks threw 81.1ip for 26 earned runs.

    in 2024 hendricks has thrown 21ip for 28 earned runs.
