Cubs vs. Reds: Darvish vs. Gray (Game 96)

CHC (51-44): RHP Yu Darvish (2-4, 4.72 ERA)
CIN (43-49): RHP Sonny Gray (5-5, 3.42 ERA)
First pitch 1:20pmCDT

Yu Darvish and the Cubs go for the series win in an afternoon finale. Darvish went six scoreless against the Pirates on Friday and remains winless at Wrigley. Derek Dietrich is 4-9 off of him and has tagged him for two homeruns. Jose Iglesias and Nick Senzel are 3-6 and 3-7 respectively.

Sonny Gray takes the mound for the Reds, coming off a 7-inning, 1-run performance in Denver that yielded him a no-decision. He earned a win against the Cubs on 6-28 with 6.1 innings pitched, two earned runs, and six strikeouts. Almora is 3-4 off of him with a homerun. Russell is 2-6 with a homer. Nobody else has more than one hit off of him.

Following a Thursday off-day, the Cubs will take on the Padres in a weekend set. It doesn't feel like it yet, but we are heading into peak hot-stove season. Teams have only until the end of the month to trade for players that will be eligible to appear on post-season rosters. The Cubs recently landed a defensive-minded third catcher, Martin Maldonado, opening up pinch-hit opportunities for Caratini or even potential OF starts for Contreras. There's not much else in the rumor mill with a Cubs' label on it.

Jon Jay - Trade Candidate?

I noticed that JJ was back from the IL & having a usual JJ quiet-productive start to his season. I think I love the idea of JJ coming back to the north side. Instantly makes the OF deeper no matter what happens with Happ or Zo. Lefty bat compliments AA in CF & can play good D at all 3 spots. Pretty even career R/L splits. Good career PH numbers if coming off the bench. Known quantity in clubhouse.

The post-seaon roster starts to feel deep & balanced...  with 13 position players including a bench of:

Caratini

Maldonado

Jay / Almora (one in CF, one on banch)

Bote / Garcia / Russell / Happ / Zobrist   (pick 3 for the 2B spot & two bench spots)

Jay--an outfielder hitting two home runs in 433 PAs with the Cubs.  Hasn't hit more than three in seven years.  Sometimes you give up power for speed, but there's no speed, either, at least in the form of SBs.

Fair points... but with this roster, I don't really care about JJ's power.  More than enough power up & down lineup.  I'm a bit "meh" on speed & SBs, especially in a 4th OF type on a post-season roster.  Call it Post-Traumatic-2018-Terrence-Gore-Disorder (PT'18TGD???). If I had to choose between a 4th OF who can pinch run or who can pinch hit, it's my personal preference for the PH. And anybody who disagrees with me is wrong & probably immoral.

Eh - double meh. How about just getting Curtis Granderson and calling it a day?

almora (really?) / baez / bryant(LF) / rizzo / caratini / heyward / russell(2nd) / bote(3rd) / darvish

Home run derby KB is a hell of a lot of fun!!

post all-star break darvish is some good stuff so far, too.

Little surprised Maddon pulled Yu after six innings and only 83 pitches - hopefully just trying to keep him fresh (and no injury concern)

JHey!!! Yu’s gotta be the happiest dude in the dugout

Finally, a Yu win at Wrigley as a Cub and a series win against the Reds. Could definitely get used to that!

c.paddack (SD) with a no-hitter through 7, 82 pitches

...and it's gone in the 8th.  now i don't have to watch a SD/MIA game anymore.

Gore to the Yankees.

You gotta be quicker than that here if you were shooting for a “breaking news” post haha

5:24 this morning.

The Cubs have optioned LHRP Randy Rosario to AAA Iowa.

Sounds like Cedeno is coming up? Didn’t sound like he impressed in his rehab at all though.

Maybe a stretch, but I wonder if the Cubs might bring Drew Smyly back as an LHRP (he had some nice K numbers for the Brewers in AAA) and give Cedeno his release.

Smyly to the Phillies. Carry on.

Tommy Birch tweets that Taylor Davis has signed with the Orioles. Hate to see him go. I will never forget his GS against the Deadbirds.

I mean, the "overrated" criticism is always more about other people deserving of the honor being snubbed or put through more rigamarole. Jeter was definitely a great player for a long time. I just want people to remember that guys like Scott Rolen are not 60% less deserving, as the current voting system seems to indicate.

    speaking of the HOF...

schilling had a nice bump in his 8th eligable year going from 60.9% to 70.0%.  he's probably gonna get in next year...and if not for his abrasive personality and questionable interests outside of baseball he would probably already be in.  he's good enough to be there based on performance alone.

fellow 8th year guys bonds and clemens held steady, going up around 1% point to 60%-ish range.  they may or may not get some love entering their 9th or 10th years.

m.ozuna signs with the braves 1/18m.

he was expected to sign for similar pay over a number of years.  the cards must be "wtf?" about him walking away from the 17.8m qualifying offer, though.  at least they get a draft pick out of it.

    5x gold glove...and earned 0 of them.

whatever.  hell of a hitter, and he played SS "good enough" to not embarass himself or the team.

but yeah, overrated even if he's a no-doubt 1st ballot hall of famer...which seems like an odd thing to say even if it's true (at least in the eyes of many).

That's a significant boost for being the face of the Yankees. Expected, but in retrospect he wasn't that much better than plenty of people who didn't have full support for the hall (Santo comes to mind).

*Tries to start an "over-rated" chant.*

d.jeter and l.walker (10th and final year on ballot, 76.6%) are going to the HOF.

jeter got 99.75% of the vote...highest for a position player (griffey jr 99.32% 2016).  m.rivera got 100% last year.

larry walker decided to dress up for his first post-election interview.  class act.

nice.  i love seeing the undrafted who still try to make a career get a shot.

it seems he's somewhat recently hit 97mph on his fastball which helped attract some interest.

    good luck to the dude.

Rex Brothers has one minor league option left and Article XX-D status (so he can elect free-agency if outrighted) if he were to be added to the Cubs MLB 40-man roster at some point in 2020.

    ummm...nevermind...

""There’s a lot of disrespect from people there that I don’t want to be a part of," Arenado said. "You can quote that." Arenado added, "You ask what I thought of Jeff’s quotes and I say I don’t care what people say around there. There is a lot of disrespect."

The third baseman didn't want to elaborate on what he felt was disrespectful, but clearing the relationship between Arenado and the front office needs to be repaired."

some good news...or bad news depending on how you feel about it...for the k.bryant trade market...

"Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich on Monday indicated that Nolan Arenado will not be dealt prior to spring training and trade talks involving the third baseman are off for now."

now MLB and crew need to decide whether bryant has an extra year of club control or not...still waiting...

rangers, braves, and nats are supposedly looking at 3rd base upgrades.  cards are, too, but bryant to the cards would be a mutiny level trade decision.
