SF (50-50): RHP Shaun Anderson (3-2, 4.87 ERA)

Alec Mills leads the Cubs against the light-hitting Giants in his second start of 2019. He went six innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits and one walk last time around for a no-decision. He's never faced the Giants, and as far as I can find no current Giants have ever faced him. There are no real offensive standouts this season. Buster Posey is not looking very Posey-like at the plate. Pablo Sandoval is back from the brink of retirement and slugging .495.Shaun Anderson gets the start for the visiting team. The 24-year-old rookie hasn't missed many bats in the majors, striking out only 5.71 per nine innings in 12 starts. His fastball sits around 93 mph and sinks. He goes to a plus slider as his main secondary pitch. No Cubs have faced him. He's allowed at least two runs in every start he's made this season. Last time out he gave up five earned runs 4.1 innings in Colorado.

Yes, yes, and yes.  Except for the very best in the game, relievers have the most variability in performance from year to year.  Kintzler was horrible last year, and is very very good in 2019.  Strop was good last year, this year his 5.47 ERA has been well earned.

This problem has a simple solution of Cishek-Kintzler-Kimbrell for the 7th-8th-9th.  Any further losses due to Strop in the 8th are on Joe.

With the trade deadline lurking who goes?  With the emergence of Robel Garcia being able to do OF/IF (similar to Bryant) and David Bote on the roster.  Who's the one moved Happ, Russell or even Almora (Heyward goes to CF and a combo of Garcia/Bryant joins Schwarber/J-Hey in the OF).  Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Almora go.  He's not hitting, running the bases (even Schwarber goes from 1st to 3rd on a single to RF), is always the first one in the middle of a bench clearing trying to throw punches.  Watching the evolution of Baez from punk prospect to mature exciting leader with baseball IQ off the charts who breaks up fights vs the deevolution of the cool mature Almora (which was one of the reason he was drafted "mature for age" to punk is amazing.  I wouldn't mind seeing him go.  His glove is amazing, but nobody is afraid of his arm and his glove can only take him so far.

The problem is trading guys when they're at low ebb, and getting the least value in return.  Almora is down in every offensive category except home runs. He has more HRs than in any previous season and could approach 20 if he gets ABs. This could be a temporary downturn while he learns to add pop to his swing. Meanwhile, his trade value is down.

Same with Russell. He added pop to his swing by practicing on his wife, and his trade value plummeted. But he was an all-star at 22. The Cubs don't need him--they have a shortstop--but would love to rehabilitate him before offering him to rival teams.

    it's so crazy we got a new "barnstorming" harlem globetrotters-type baseball product that was introduced less than 5 years ago and is wildly popular all over the nation.

    No question right now Alfonsin Rosario is one of the Cubs Top 20 prospects (probably Top 15). Rosario is to the Cubs what Zyhir Hope is to the Dodgers.

    The Savannah Bananas will be playing the Party Animals at Sloan Park in Mesa this coming Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The games are sold out (15,000+ each night), and berm tickets are going for well over $100.

    RAISIN: In the game versus the A's at Fitch Park last Friday, Mule threw half FB and half SL (16/16), and one CH (which coincidentally was the only hard-hit ball off him -- a near HR line-drive double off the LF fence). FB was 91-94 and the SL (really more of a "slurve") was 80-82, and he got three swing & miss on each pitch (six swing & miss total out of his 20 strikes). So I think it is safe to say that right now, Mule is strictly a two-pitch pitcher (FB/SL),

    Recalled it was sampled in a Nas song.  Did a little sleuthing.  It was a Nas song called "Hate Me Now" that featured Puff Daddy.  Imploring the crowd to hate somebody seems a bit overly dramatic for a keyboardist but perhaps there is some other connection to the song. 

     

    In general there has been a weird overuse of Carmina Burana's O Fortuna in sports and commercials in past decade or so.  Maybe it is a fallback choice if there isn't anything else.   

     

    Sidenote, while the O Fortuna part has become a bit pop-culture cliched; the overall piece is very interesting and rather expansive in scope. I played percussion in a production of it while in college.  There is a rather jovial movement set in a tavern.  In the score it calls for the clinking of beer steins.  Let's just say we did a lot of research to determine the best sounding beer steins.

    who was AB when it was being played?  it could be something as corny as playing it for nick fortes because fortes/fortuna...fortes...marlins...fish...tuna...sigh.

    while the cubs organ player isn't a frequent groaner weaponizing the organ song selection, they all dabble in it.

    in 2016 hendricks threw 190 innings for 45 earned runs.

    in the shortened 2020 season hendricks threw 81.1ip for 26 earned runs.

    in 2024 hendricks has thrown 21ip for 28 earned runs.
