Cubs @ Phillies: Quintana vs. Vargas (Game 119)

CHC (64-54): LHP Jose Quintana (10-7, 4.23 ERA)
PHI (60-58): LHP Jason Vargas (6-6, 4.09 ERA)
First pitch 6:05pmCDT

The Cubs go to Philly with the Cardinals 2 back and the Brewers trailing by 2.5. It's long past time for this team to put their road struggles behind them if they are going to be taken serious as contenders this year. Quintana is a good candidate to help them get started. He's walked fewer and given up fewer homeruns on the road, and he's pitched 17.2 more innings on the road this season than he has at Wrigley. He was great last time out, allowing one earned run and striking out seven Athletics in seven innings pitched. Happ, Bryant, and Caratini backed him with homeruns in that Cubs win to clinch the series against Oakland. He had a no decision against the Phils on May 21, having allowed two unearned runs in six innings of work. Corey Dickers is 6-14 off of him with a homerun. Joey Bats is 2-26 with 11 strikeouts.

Vargas was sent to the Phils from the Mets on July 29, after the Mets added Stroman to their rotation. The veteran lefty is 0-1 in two starts since the trade, allowing 6 earned runs in 11.1 innings pitched on nine hits and four walks. He faced the Cubs and got a no decision on June 21, allowing four runs, two earned, in 4.1 Most of the younger Cubs haven't seen much of Vargas. Rizzo is 1-11 with four strikeouts. Nick Castellanos is 5-22 with two homeruns. (Ben Zobrist has hit .406 off of him in his career, 32 at bats.)

kimbrel threw a session today and said he feels fine.  he could be activated this weekend if everything goes right.

so...how many teams have the cubs pissed off this season by HBP like 10-15 guys in a game?

First two batters has hit this year.

it would have been a 3rd if it wasn't for a called foul/swing.  dickerson may be missing a good number of games.  his hand got wrecked.

wtf marty foster.

also, start the maddon gets tossed clock.  that is a b/s 9th inning missed call for a K.

The called K on Kemp in the ninth - woof

That kind of call should keep an ump out of post season duty.

0.0% chance of that ball being called a strike

joe nathan's 300th save on a zobrist K...with maddon managing...in 2013 in TB...DEEP STATE BASEBALL.

that loss sucked.

Q pitched a hell of a no-decision with 14Ks (career high)

Well, at least the pitching matchup is easier tomorrow with Nola going - don’t have to deal with a nasty matchup like Vargas whose fastball topped out at 83 mph

RHP Edward Vasquez (2017 IFA - Dominican Republic) has retired.

    E. Vasquez was one of the top SP on DSL Cubs Red in 2019 and was expected to be a SP on one of the Cubs AZL teams in 2020 if the minor league season hadn't been canceled.

He would have been first-time Rule 5 Draft eligible post-2021.

danny hultzen retires and joins the cubs as a "pitching development assistant"

shame the comeback story didn't last longer...but hey, at least he got to taste the bigs after his body failed him for so many years.

The 2021 guaranteed amount is $7 + $3 million mutual option buyout. 10>8.  Most media reports summarizes it as a $10 million deal.

Thanks Eric. After I put it up I thought.. damn I'm old. I wonder if people even remember back that far. I still think about that day. Uggh. Sorry.

I'm always confused by this. They also could have tendered him and then boosted his value by trading him with a million or two in cash considerations. Obviously, that's a million or two more expensive than simply non-tendering--but couldn't you at least get an interesting prospect in return from one of these teams? They obviosuly thought it was worth their return to toss in a few million in the Darvish trade.

    The 2021 amount is 7.

    The buyout is 3.

chase strumpf is quickly emerging as a "trendy" organizational hot prospect, even among non-cubs fans.  amaya is having a decent winter league showing so far...taking a lot of walks, too.
