Do All Roads Lead to Losses?

The I-Cubs headed to Memphis late last week with a road record that was the envy of their parents and a magic number of nine. Had they swept the four-game set with the Redbirds, they’d be returning home tonight with a chance to clinch their quarter of the PCL and lock in their spot in the divisional playoffs. Instead of the broomers, alas, they were doomed and got broomed.

Not even 1st inning homers on consecutive days by none other than Dinger Dan Descalso and contributions from demoted and divorced big leaguers the likes of Almora and Zobrist could stem the Memphis tide. It crested yesterday with a 14-2 flash flood that finished off an aggregate 35-10 sandbagging there on the banks of the Mississippi, not quite 300 miles downstream from boring St. Louis. Hmm…maybe DD, AA & BZ were enough to infect the team with a C-Cub case of roaditis.

Still, the ICs sit pretty pretty. A seven-game lead with 15 to play isn’t mathematically insurmountable but effectively, it is. Except the last four games of the regular season are versus the Memphisians, here in Des Moines, where the record is only 28-31 (compared to 38-28 on the road, even after the Memphis massacre). The local park sits at the fork of two rivers but combined they’re no match for the Mighty Miss. Since the spring monsoons they’ve receded to sandbar and puddle levels.

Probably best to finish whittling that nine down to zero before the Labor Day weekend.

David Bote sent down to Iowa today prior to Cishek’s activation off the IL tomorrow — nice of the Cubs do their part to help the I-Cubs down the stretch

Expect the Cubs to move-up several position players and pitchers from Tennessee to Iowa for the PCL playoffs to replace Iowa pitchers & players recalled by the Cubs when rosters expand on 9/1. (Zack Short has already been moved-up from Tennessee to Iowa to replace David Bote). 

I am reminded of when Ryan Theriot was called-up from AA to MLB in September 2005 to replace Ronny Cedeno after Cedeno suffered a season-ending thumb injury, and some writer asked Theriot if he would have rather stayed in West Tenn and help lead the Diamond Jaxx to the Southern League Championship or sit on the bench in Chcago, and he said:  

"Are you nuts!!!??? The only reason you play in the minor leagues is to get to the big leagues. The minor leagues are the minor leagues."

    I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

    They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

    I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

    They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

    The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

    I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.
