Cubs vs. Giants: Hamels vs. Beede (Game 125)
CHC (66-58): LHP Cole Hamels (6-4, 3.69 ERA)
SF (63-62): RHP Tyler Beede (3-7, 5.77 ERA)
First pitch 7:05pmCDT
The Cubs swapped Bote for Cishek before the game, bolstering a bullpen that recently got back Craig Kimbrel as well. That plus the two wins the team put together at the end of the road trip should help them put their Pennsylvania struggles behind them. Meanwhile, Cole Hamels prepares to take on the Giants at Wrigley.
Hamels has had two rough starts in a row, with his last being his worst of the season so far. He allowed eight earned runs in two innings of work on nine hits and two walks. This will be his first start against the Giants this season. Brandon Belt is 2-6 with a homerun off of him. Buster Posey is 13-24 with two homeruns, but that was before his power disappeared. Hamels has a 2.35 ERA at Wrigley this year vs. 5.16 on the road and has held batters to .635 OPS in the confines.
Tyler Beede lost to Oakland last time out, allowing four earned runs in four innings of work. He last won on July 14 and has gone 0-4 in the six starts since then with 22 earned runs allowed in 31.1 innings pitched. He lost to the Cubs on July 24 when Javy and Bryant both took him deep.
The Cubs trail the Cardinals by 0.5 games following the off-day and a Cardinals win over the Brewers, putting the Brewers 3 back in the division and 2.5 behind the Cubs. Those rivals face off again today and Wednesday.

Lots of games where they failed to add on.
Lots of games Strop has single handedly blown, too.

There are so many candidates. The early season losing streak comes painfully to mind.

JHey's swing looks like it slipped into groundout mode. That Nico lineout was heartbreaking. :(

Threw Vanmeter a curve and changeup that both looked great on TV, though Vanmeter didn't offer.

First thing I'll point to, depending on the final order of finish, is the fact that, for the second year in a row we took the lead off of Hader in the 8th inning of a key late-season game @ Milwaukee & couldn't keep it. The second thing will be the game we led 5-0 after 7 & managed to lose. Nats next face Marlins. Cards come to town licking their chops/beaks to finish us off...

They’re toast. Can’t finish games, can’t finish series, and it looks very much like they won’t finish this season.

The Cubbies are in a tough situation. If they make the playoffs, they will have earned it!. Enjoy the ride folks.

Reds win season series 11-8 - possibly the first thing you point to should the Cubs miss the post season

Heard Len say Descalso’s name and about had a heart attack. Then heard him say “pinch runner” and settled down a bit

Contreras's receiving didn't do Norwood any favors in that Vanmeter at-bat. And Norwood needed some favors.

Gotta do better than three hits in nine innings in a start by Mahle - this one is on the bats

i'm all about kemp protecting a lead in the last few innings or getting to play after some pinch running, but that dude's bat is getting way too much work. now that getting him starts isn't a priority he's still getting a lot of early shots off the bench at the plate.
i hope to not see him next season.

Until Russell gets off the concussion protocol and/or Baez returns, Kemp may be the best option at second for defense, but Bote certainly better there defensively than Happ or Zobrist
