Cubs @ Mets: Darvish vs. Stroman (Game 131)

CHC (69-61): RHP Yu Darvish (4-6, 4.43 ERA)
NYM (67-63): RHP Marcus Stroman (7-11, 3.18 ERA)
First pitch 6:10pmCDT

The Cubs reversed course in their last series, following a sweep of the Giants with a sweep at the hands of the Nats. The Cards defeated the Brewers on the Cubs' day off and now lead the North Siders by 3 full games. The Cubs will look to pull another about face and gather some rare road wins against the Mets, who trail the Cubs in the race for the second wild card spot by only two games.

Yu Darvish is charged with starting things off against the Metropolitans. His last start took his second half trends to their extremes. He juxtaposed zero walks and eight strikeouts to four extremely damaging homeruns allowed in 5.1 innings. The narrative was his performance unraveling in the sixth after he missed a catch covering first base, but that storytelling neglects the pair of two-run homers he allowed to Longoria and Yastrzemski in the first and fifth innings. His struggles with the longball have the the constant in his 2019. He's now allowed 30 in 26 starts. He surrendered two of those homeruns in a no-decision to the Mets on June 21. McNeil and Conforto own those dingers. Cano, 9-28 with a .845 OPS against Darvish, is on the IL with a hamstring injury.

Since coming over from Toronto, Stroman is 1-0 in four starts. He hasn't been quite as sharp as usual, 25 hits and 10 walks in 19.1 innings. Lucroy is 4-5 with a double off of him. Castellanos is 2-14 with a homerun. Most other Cubs will be getting their first looks at the righty. Rizzo is likely still unavailable due to back tightness, but expect Joe to stack as many lefties as possible otherwise to take advantage of Stroman's significant platoon splits this year.

ham goes on the paternity list...james norwood up because why not...

heyward / cast / bryant / baez / schwarb / happ(1st) / caratini / russell / darvish

The fact that Shwarber has never gotten reps at 1st is confusing to me. Happ looked good there the other day, but traditionally Schwarber makes more sense to back up 1st and Happ to get the LF time.

I'm assuming we aren't getting Caratini at 1st and Lucroy behind the plate because Joe is worried about having a catcher on the bench.

i'm just wondering what bote did to earn so little playing time (and even a short demotion) after starting to get hot.

i don't think he's a franchise player or anything, but i've seen a lot more of some of his alternatives than i'd like to see.

Maybe Joe's secret pocket card shows that Kemp is hitting a loud .167 over the last 30.  My eyes have decieved me before.

leadoff triple doesn't score?  mets, that's some cubbery right there.

contreras caught some pen and took BP today.

Yuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

AZ Phil, what are your thoughts on the discussion to eliminate 42 low minor league teams in 2021? What would this do to the Dominican League? Thanks.

Thanks for this. I agree they’ll probably take their chances in the Rule 5 if he will resign, though I really wouldn’t mind adding him back to the 40 man. I feel like he has a good chance to be effective out of the bullpen.

I hope Sagara doesn’t end up leaving because of the shakeup. The Athletic did report that his position might be eliminated but that he should be offered another role in the organization somewhere. All I know is Sagara’s name came up frequently in connection with the pitch lab, and he was credited for improvements with Ryan, Wick, and Wieck. Maybe he’ll end up focusing more specifically in that role helping guys tweak things in the lab.

Does anyone have insight into the new management hires and musical chairs the Cubs announced yesterday?  Craig Breslow might be the only guy out there with extensive MLB experience AND the grey matter to challenge any quant not making sense. His role intrigues me but are they going to give him real responsibility to clear out the deadwood (including the existing minor league coordinator who was never good enough to be the pitchers he's coaching?)  Or, is this a superficial change aimed at keeping ownership off Theo's back?

BRADSBEARD: I think the Cubs want to retain Oscar de la Cruz post-2019, just not on the MLB 40-man roster.

Who are you all rooting for in the World Series? I'm rooting for the Nats to face and defeat Houston, I think, but with very mild interest. Let them get that championship out of the way and then maybe go the way of the post-2016 Cubs.

AZ Phil, what do you think the Cubs will do with Oscar de la Cruz if they don’t add him back to the 40 man? Can they try to re-sign him but wait until after the Rule 5 to make it official? Do you think they will try to keep him in the organization in some fashion?

Angels also make sense as a destination for Kris Bryant.

I wonder if Maddon will take any of the coaches with him.

  • Arizona Phil 3 days 16 hours ago (view)

I doubt that Maddon would have taken the job if the Angels aren't fully prepared to sign one or maybe even two FA TOR SP (like Gerrit Cole and/or Stephen Strasburg if he opts out).

When you have the best player in MLB and now the highest-paid manager, not making the playoffs again in 2020 just can't be acceptable.

    HOU/NYY postponed.

  • crunch 4 days 4 hours ago (view)

as expected, joe maddon to be the new manager of the angels.

btw, it is unlikely tonight's HOU @ NYY (10/16) will happen because of rain that's going to start 3-4 hours before game time and carry well into the night.

Oof. Hudson leaves the game after giving up five runs on singles and doubles and only getting one out.
