Minor League Rosters
Rule 5 Draft
Minor League Free-Agents

Cubs vs. Mariners: Hendricks vs. Sheffield (Game 137)

CHC (73-63): RHP Kyle Hendricks (9-9, 3.47 ERA)
SEA (58-80): LHP Justus Sheffield (0-1, 7.94 ERA)
First pitch 1:20pmCDT

Kyle Hendricks toes the rubber and may have to tow the lagging Cubs offense toward a home victory in the series opener. He'll need to be sharper than his last start, in which he couldn't get out of the fifth and allowed six earned runs on eight hits including two homeruns. Current Mariners are 9-50 off of him with one extra base hit.Justus Sheffield is 0-1 in two MLB starts and three total 2019 appearances, having allowed seven walks and fifteen hits in 11.1 innings pitched. The minor league track record suggests he should get grounders but also surrender a fair number of walks.

The Cubs trail the Cards by 3 games following another loss to the Brewers and the Cardinals splitting a double header. The Cards start a four-game set against the Giants.

r.blakney's zone behind the plate is quite huge.

someone's gonna get tossed today if this zone stays this wide.

king felix on the mound tomorrow...probably see zobrist back and leading off.

David Phelps made his 30th appearance of the 2019 MLB regular season on Monday which automatically esclates his 2020 club option salary from $1M to $3M, and it will escalate further to $5M if he makes 40 appearances (at least 10 more appearances over the Cubs final 25 regular season games).

Phelps also has an additional $3.25M in potential 2020 performance bonuses tied to appearances and GF on top of the salary, but there is no buy-out if the 2020 club option is declined, so if the 2020 club option gets too steep the Cubs can just decline the 2020 option and walk away from it or else maybe renogotiate the contract (like maybe guarantee the performance bonuses and spead out the money over a couple of seasons).

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
