Cubs vs. Mariners: Lester vs. Hernandez (Game 138)

CHC (74-63): LHP Jon Lester (11-9, 4.36 ERA)
SEA (48-81): RHP Félix Hernández (1-4, 6.02 ERA)
First pitch 7:05pmCDT

Lester gave his team six innings of one-run baseball against the Mets in his final August start. Today, he and his supporting cast will go for a two-game sweep against the visiting Mariners. Kyle Seager with two homeruns off of the lefty, and Dee Gordon is 2-8. Most other Mariners have only a few at bats against the veteran.

Félix Hernández battled shoulder issues for much of the season, missing most of May and all of June and July and returning to the majors in late August. In two starts since that return, he's pitched 11.2 innings and allowed five earned runs on eight hits (three homeruns) and four walks, collecting seven strikeouts along the way. Heyward is 3-12 and Lucroy 3-16 off of the man who once was King. Castellanos and Rizzo are each 2-5 with a homerun.

The Cubs made use of several players from the expanded roster yesterday's win, starting Robel Garcia and using Underwood and Wieck out of the bullpen. Zobrist has yet to make his highly anticipated(?) return, Javy will probably continue to rest his injured thumb, and Contreras is still making his way back to the active roster.

also, d.holland is back...

For all Joe’s talk of giving guys soft landings, Joe really doesn’t seem to be a big fan of a soft landing.

brewers have released jeremy "smoke 2 joints" jeffress.  all-star last year...fodder this year.

he was put on waivers without being claimed.

sigh...

bryant scratched with right knee soreness...an ongoing issue.

STL's recent surge is nothing short of black magic

naw.  no.  i'm calling the cops.

j.soler is the new single-season HR king for KC...hit his 39th tonight.

Calling up Contreras with minimal rehab time is paying off early.

zobrist and contreras with a hell of a return.

rizzo gave the ball ryan court (SEA) hit to the 1st base coach and into the SEA dugout.  it was ryan court's first hit at wrigley field.

aside from a single season with the cubs in AAA (he never got his callup) he's got strong connections to the cubs beyond his minor league season as a fan growing up and even though his professional career.  he's from elgin, IL.

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/bas...

lester with an ugly as hell 0 run 6 inning outting.  he never got hit hard, but SEA took advantage of a bit of wildness and contreras not being "split second" fast behind the plate (contreras still looks sharp back there).  SEA didn't do anything with that advantage, though.

he left em loaded 3 times.  phew.

cubs win!  cards win.

Somehow the Nats won too. What a disaster for the Mets.

Brewers and Phillies win too.

Cubs continue the season of no traction.

    Phil.

On what days of the calendar do players get to decide if they're going to opt out of their contracts?

Australian football games are being played before empty stadiums. I doubt that's a conducive environment to opting out.

Hey all, just checking in to say that yesterday was a really sad but appreciative day in my household.  It is still completely mystifying that the Cubs couldn't find a way to extend Rizzo and Javy especially, and there's still some hope here that one or both guys can come back next year along with a Contreras extension.  While they were here, Rizzo, Javy and KB especially gave us so much as players and made the last half decade really special for Cubs fans.  Thanks guys.

(Also, please let some of these prospects become the next Hendricks or Arrieta and not the next Mike Olt.)

mlb.com has already updated their "top 30" team prospect rankings post-trade deadline.  https://www.mlb.com/prospects/cubs/

    pete crow-armstrong #6 (mets)

    alexander canario #7 (giants)

    alexander vizcaino #8 (yanks)

    kevin alcantara #11 (yanks)

    caleb kilian #16 (giants)

    greg deichmann #20 (A's)

i like caleb kilian more than the mlb.com ranking of #16.  if he manages to finish the season strong he should have no problem working his way into the top-10.

Anderson Espinoza will get a 4th minor league option in 2023 and Alexander Canario will get a 4th minor league option in 2024 (if needed).
