Cubs vs. Mariners: Lester vs. Hernandez (Game 138)

CHC (74-63): LHP Jon Lester (11-9, 4.36 ERA)
SEA (48-81): RHP Félix Hernández (1-4, 6.02 ERA)
First pitch 7:05pmCDT

Lester gave his team six innings of one-run baseball against the Mets in his final August start. Today, he and his supporting cast will go for a two-game sweep against the visiting Mariners. Kyle Seager with two homeruns off of the lefty, and Dee Gordon is 2-8. Most other Mariners have only a few at bats against the veteran.Félix Hernández battled shoulder issues for much of the season, missing most of May and all of June and July and returning to the majors in late August. In two starts since that return, he's pitched 11.2 innings and allowed five earned runs on eight hits (three homeruns) and four walks, collecting seven strikeouts along the way. Heyward is 3-12 and Lucroy 3-16 off of the man who once was King. Castellanos and Rizzo are each 2-5 with a homerun.

The Cubs made use of several players from the expanded roster yesterday's win, starting Robel Garcia and using Underwood and Wieck out of the bullpen. Zobrist has yet to make his highly anticipated(?) return, Javy will probably continue to rest his injured thumb, and Contreras is still making his way back to the active roster.

also, d.holland is back...

brewers have released jeremy "smoke 2 joints" jeffress.  all-star last year...fodder this year.

he was put on waivers without being claimed.

sigh...

bryant scratched with right knee soreness...an ongoing issue.

zobrist(2nd) / schwarb / cast / rizzo / contreras / happ(3rd) / heyward / russell(SS) / lester

lester with an ugly as hell 0 run 6 inning outting.  he never got hit hard, but SEA took advantage of a bit of wildness and contreras not being "split second" fast behind the plate (contreras still looks sharp back there).  SEA didn't do anything with that advantage, though.

he left em loaded 3 times.  phew.

I worry that Morel will lose starts at 3B as long as this roster lacks a compelling DH.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.
