Cubs 2020 Player Development & Minor League Staff Assignments

Here are the 2020 Cubs Player Development and minor league staff assignments (at least a couple of positions still TBA). 

Of note is the Cubs first female field coach, the re-naming/re-designating of AZL Cubs #1 to AZL Cubs Blue, AZL Cubs #2 to AZL Cubs Red, DSL Cubs #1 to DSL Cubs Blue, and DSL Cubs #2 to DSL Cubs Red, and some re-definition of roles and job titles.   

Three of the new hires (Director of Hitting Justin Stone, South Bend Hitting Coach Dan Puente, and AZL Cubs Blue Assistant Coach Rachel Folden) come to the Cubs from Chicago-based Elite Baseball Training, and another (Pitching Development Coordinator Casey Jacobson) comes to the Cubs from Driveline Baseball in Kent, WA.

I would think the starting point in the discussion of a return package for Kris Bryant would be a young MLB (or near MLB-ready) SP who is both more MLB-ready than Brailyn Marquez and with a higher upside than Adbert Alzolay or Alec Mills, meaning Ian Anderson or Kyle Wright (ATL), Zac Gallen (AZ), Spencer Howard (PHI), or Luis Patino (SD), presuming those teams would have interest in acquiring KB in a trade.

TEX and maybe WAS would probably be interested, too, but the Rangers top two SP prospects (Hans Crouse and Cole Winn) and the Nationals top SP prospect (Jackson Rutledge) are just too far away from MLB to be the SP centerpiece in a Bryant trade, unless the Cubs are willing to punt the 2020 season.

Some possible price tags for Kris Bryant (but only if he loses his grievance and has two years of club control left): 

from... 

AZ: RHSP Zac Gallen, RHSP Jon Duplantier, and INF Andy Young (plus INF Daniel Descalso for 3B-1B Jake Lamb to save about $3M in 2020 salary for AZ after adding Bryant - Lamb 2020 AAV about $5.5M versus Bryant/Descalso combined 2020 AAV about $21M so Cubs subtract about $15.5M in 2020 AAV by making this trade and then could sign Nicholas Castellanos if they can trade Jose Quintana's $10.5 salary without a salary offset). Bryant plays 3B for D'backs for two seasons while their up & coming farm system matures. 

ATL: RHSPs Ian Anderson, Kyle Wright, and/or Bryce Wilson (Braves keep one - ATL choice), and 3B Austin Riley, plus CF Albert Almora for CF Ender Inciarte (Bryant/Almora 2020 combined AAV about $20M offset by Inciarte's $6M AAV for a $14M AAV reduction for Cubs, and then if Cubs can trade Quintana without salary offset they can sign Castellanos). Braves would have no use for Austin Riley if they acquire Bryant and they have more young SP than they need, and they save about $5.5M off Bryant's 2020 $18.6M salary by exchanging Inciarte's7M 2020 salary for Almora;s $1.575M (Inciarte's 2020 AAV is $1M lower than his actual 2020 salary because his contract has annual salary escalators).   

LAD: RHSPs Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, and/or Josiah Gray (Dodgers keep one - LAD choice) and 3B Kody Hoese, plus INF Daniel Descalso for CF A. J. Pollock (Bryant/Descalso combined $21M 2020 AAV offset by Pollock's $14M 2020 AAV subtracts $7M from Cubs 2020 AAV and would take them under the CBT threshhold by only about $3M so they would not be able to sign Castellanos even if they trade Quintana). And Dodgers get out from under Pollock contract they won't need if they acquire Bryant. 

PHI: 3B Alec Bohm or RHSP Spencer Howard (Phillies keep one - PHI choice), RHSP Nick Pivetta, and RHSP Vince Velazquez (so exchanging Velazquez's $3.6M 2020 salary offsets Bryant's $18.6M 2020 salary a bit for the Phils, and Cubs save $15M in 2020 AAV and if they can trade Quintana without a salary offset they can sign Castellanos). And Bryce Harper then has a buddy on the team for two years. 
 
SD: RHSP Luis Patino or LHSP Adrian Morejon (Padres keep one - SD choice) and RHSP Dinelson Lamet, plus INF Daniel Descalso for INF-OF Wil Myers (a 100% salary offset for SD in 2020 but Myers and Lamet combined 2020 AAV is only $15M vs Bryant/Descalso combined AAV $21M so Cubs gain $6M in 2020 AAV and thereby get under 2020 CBT by only $2M by making this trade so they would not be able to sign Castellanos even if they trade Quintana). Bryant would play RF (not 3B) for SD and Padres unload the onerous Myers contract (actual annual salaries 2020-22 are worse than the AAV because he signed the extension three years before he was eligible to be a FA). 

Really all it takes is one club to view KB as the guy who can put them over the top and for that club to be worried that a competitor will get him. 

As for where Jose Quintana is likely to go if he gets traded, most likely landing spots (presuming the other club is willing to pay all of Quintana's 2020 salary) are MIN, TOR, LAA, OAK, and HOU.

evidently the cubs are sourcing 2020 players out of that trash can houston was banging on.

at least they gave up a chunk of nothing for him (clayton daniel, no power (not even doubles power), not notable speed, middle IF/OFr).

it would probably be better appreciated by fans if the entire offseason wasn't stuff like this.

it's obvious the front office is trying to work with what they have...which is little to nothing from the ownership.

Unfortunately (for the Cubs) Casey Sadler doesn't fit as a Des Moines - Chicago shuttle-rider because he is out of minor league options and he can elect free-agency if he is outrighted (he has Article XX-D rights because he been outrighted previously in his career).

And Tyler Olson has a similar profile as Casey Sadler (out of minor league options and has Article XX-D rights if he is added to the 40), the only difference being (unlike Sadler) Olson will come to Spring Training not on the 40 so he can be sent to Iowa without restrictions, but if & when he's added to the 40 he isn't a Des Moines - Chicago shuttle-rider candidate.

I agree, this offseason has been a disgrace.  If I'm Theo I'm thinking I am in OAK or CHI?  This ownership has given him nothing this year.  Even the cheap Twins are willing to sign Josh Donaldson and the Cubs biggest transaction this offseason may be adding Miguel Amaya to the 40 man.

that's cool.  no restrictions unless the team chooses to be cautious, evidently.

also they signed C josh phegley to a minor league deal.  meh glove, great arm.  he's not a guy you want paired with a pitcher who has a lot of movement on their stuff, but he's rather reliable if he's not challenged too much.  for those that are fans of "pitch framing" he's one of the worst, but worrying about the 1-2 pitches outside of the "missed call" norm effect per game is best left for Baseball Prospectus to freak out about and pretend it's extremely important.  he got off to a hot start with his power last season for a couple months then sharply declined...still, he's got the capability in him.  that's about all you can say about the bat because he's not much for hits and he doesn't know how to take a walk.  cheap/experienced organizational depth that won't hurt as a major league injury replacement or backup catcher.

    Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

    Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

    4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

    5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

    Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

    I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

    Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

    i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

    it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.
