Cubs @ Cardinals: Series Thread (Games 14-16)

An early season hot streak brings the 2020 Cubs to a division-leading 10-3 record as they travel to St. Louis for the first time. The Cards (2-3), meanwhile, will be playing only their 6th game of the season following a significant COVID outbreak and a 8-day layoff. The risk of contagion remains the only thing more concerning than the Cubs' bullpen.

Game 14
Friday, August 7, 7:15pmCDT
CHC: LHP Jon Lester (1-0, 0.82 ERA)
STL: RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon (0-1, 6.75 ERA)

Lester has been both good and fortunate so far. The .091 BABIP certainly helps.

Ponce de Leon has pitched only 4 innings in one relief appearance and one start. He had a 3.70 ERA in 48.2 innings last year.

Game 15
Saturday, August 8, 7:15pmCDT
CHC: RHP Alec Mills (2-0, 1.38 ERA)
STL: RHP Adam Wainwright (1-0, 1.50 ERA)

Alec Mills continue to mix pitches and speeds effectively in his start against the Royals and earned himself his second win. Anything he does beyond eat innings is gravy for the Cubs. So as long as he's pitching like this out of the back of the rotation, I am happy to continue riding the gravy caboose.

Adam Wainwright used sheer veteran know-how and Cardinals-ness to earn 14 wins last year.

Game 16
Sunday, August 9, 6:08pmCDT (ESPN broadcast)
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks
STL: TBD

Hendricks defeated the Royals last time. He went seven innings and allowed two earned runs.

Comments

Tonight's Cubs-Cardinals game postponed due to an additional Cards positive CoViD-19 test.

The additional STL player who tested positive had apparently been out in public with the others who tested positive earlier this week when they were infected, so while the new positive test is not a surprise, the lag/delay in the player testing positive is probably a bit concerning/disappointing.

Based upon the way MLB handled the Marlins positive tests and the Phillies only potential exposure, I wouldn't be surprised if all three of the Cubs-Cards games this weekend will ultimately be canceled.

le sigh...

Make the Deadbirds forfeit all three games.

So the Cubs are off until Tuesday.

i can't even imagine what it's like playing fantasy baseball this season.

It feels like you have no time to let players you know are good figure out how to get out of slumps. It's not ideal, and feels very much like it's not baseball.

i played for decades in various formats.  i got crazy busy 3 years ago, took a year off, and never got back into it.

it's a great way to stay engaged with all the players and introduce yourself to emerging talent other people see that may not be on your radar.

Never played roto baseball but enjoy listening to roto podcasts for the very same reasons you list.

I presume they come back to Chicago for the weekend and travel to Cleveland on Tuesday.

Saved from an August weekend in Stl. Plus, it might eliminate any road games vs Stl. They might do makeups during the 3 game series at Wrigley Mon 8-17 to Wed 8-19 (Thursday 8-20 is a scheduled off day for the Cubs but StL plays the Reds in StL at night) or the 4 game series against the Cardinals at Wrigley Friday 9-4 through Mon 9-7.

"Cardinals' president of baseball operations John Mozeliak announced Friday that Ryan Helsley and Austin Dean are the two players that tested positive for COVID-19."

at least this DET/PIT game has been great.  no cubs til tuesday at the earliest...boo.

at least this HOU/OAK game has been great since the DET/PIT game has ended.  sigh.

ex-cub-for-a-minute derek holland (PIT) had a bad 1st inning today...homer, single, homer, homer, homer in his first 11 pitches.

So much for his offseason workouts with Kimbrel.

Pirates-Cardinals series also cancelled. Maybe they can play the games on Stratomatic with dice or All-Star baseball with spinners?

This was the Pirates only trip to StL but they do have a mid Sept series vs StL in PIT.
at least the Cardinals can't whine about losing home attendance revenue (but they do lose in Park advertising revs).

They actually did a Strat-O-Matic simulation of the 1981 all star game at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland when the game was cancelled due to the strike, complete with scoreboard display.  Bob Feller did the ceremonial first dice roll.

Phillip Evans suffered a broken jaw and a concussion in his ugly collision with Gregory Polanco Per Jon Heyman.

Cubs have reset the rotation ahead of the series against the Indians: Lester, Hendricks, Darvish, Chatwood and Mills

Mills and Hendricks no longer back to back which makes sense given their similar styles

"Zach Plesac (CLE) was sent home by the Indians and will be quarantined for 72 hours going out with friends in Chicago on Saturday night."

dude, wtf...

STL is going to go 1/2 month without playing a game...more at this point are possible.

they've played 5 games.  some teams have played 16-17 games.

I understand why it feels unsettling. I remember the series well (though I, unlike Theo, actually was in high school). Anyway, I view it as a chance to right previous wrongs in the same way we stomped StL out of the playoffs in 2015, or the way the Nationals got to burn through two teams last year that had dumped them out of October in previous seasons.

But if we lose, of course that was 17 years ago so it's two extremely different organizations.

DJL: All players on Optional Assignment to the minors must be recalled on the day after the conclusion of the MLB regular season, even if the player has not spent at least ten days on Optional Assignment. Players cannot be optioned to the minors again until Spring Training.

CHAMP: No option year is spent just by calling up a player to MLB. An option year is spent only if a player on an MLB 40-man roster is optioned to the minors for at least 20 days in a given season.

Also, Brailyn Marquez is (was) eligible for selection in the Rule 5 Draft in December, so the Cubs were going to add him to the 40 on 11/20 anyway. They just did it a couple of months early.

Not sure if serious, but Theo became the Red Sox GM in 2002. It's true though, there probably aren't many people in the organization besides Ricketts and Crane Kenney who have any strong feelings about that series.

I wonder if anyone on the Cubs cares or even remembers the odd events when the Marlins played the Cubs in 2003. I think Theo was in high school. To this old fart it will be more than a little unsettling to watch this post-season match-up. At least we can be fairly certain there will no fans grabbing for foul balls.

Which is kind of annoying. Nobody really picked the Cubs to win this division pre-season. I guess Mattingly gets some credit for guiding the Marlins through their positives but even just letting them play that one game with half the team sick should knock him out of consideration. Meanwhile Ross kept a tight ship and the Cubs has no positives all year. I'd say Ross or Tingler should get it over Mattingly.

cubs finish 34-26 (1st, division)...they play MIA on wednesday.

good start for d.ross, but the manager of the year is most likely going to d.mattingley (MIA) or j.tingler(SD).

...or he won't make it out of the 8th

    0.2ip 2h 3bb 1k, 5r/er...2 wild pitches

there's some great stuff in that arm.  mid/high-80s slider, "changeup" around 90mph, fastball 97-99mph...all effortless.  21 years old and never pitched above A-ball.

rough debut...doubt we're going to see him in the 9th.

Reminds me a little of Jeff Samardzija's debut. Adrenaline throwing straight gas but all over the place. Samardzija threw a fastball all the way to the backstop in his debut (2008).

back to back 3-2 count 6-pitch walks.

he's not in the zone.  he's throwing almost totally fastballs, too.

alzolay's gotta be locked in for a start given what he's done lately.

i wonder what role j.lester will be given.  if he's starting, hopefully he's the 3rd/4th starter, if at all.  someone will probably give him a 2021 contract if he doesn't retire...hope it's not the cubs giving that contract, though.

dude's thrown a 97mph and 98mph fastball to start and both looked like he was barely expending effort.

unfortunately, neither were near the plate.

  • Charlie 23 hours 9 min ago (view)

So, Alzolay gets at least one October start, right? He'd be a weapon out of the pen if the Cubs had more than two believable starters ready.

    Q goes 2 effective (2ip 2h 1bb 2k, 0r/er) and here comes b.marquez...
