Cubs vs./@ Cardinals: Series Thread (Games 20-24)

Coming off the equivalent of an 8.1-game losing streak (1-3 series) vs. the Brewers, the Cubs now welcome their St. Louis rivals for a 5-game series at Wrigley. Featuring two double headers and two "away" games played in their home stadium, it is likely to be an early contender for weirdest series of the year. The Cardinals begin the series an unlikely second place in the division, holding a .500 record but having played fewer than half the games the Cubs have played.
There's a bit too much here for me to preview on a busy Monday morning, but here are the probable starters.

Day 1, Game 1:
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks
STL: LHP Kwang Hyun Kim

Day 1, Game 2:
CHC: RHP Adbert Alzolay
STL: RHP Austin Gomber

Day 2:
CHC: RHP Yu Darvish
STL: RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon

Day 3, Game 1:
CHC: RHP Colin Rea
STL: RHP Jack Flaherty

Day 3, Game 2:
CHC: RHP Alec Mills
STL: LHP Ricardo Sanchez

Don't worry everyone, noted worthless catcher du jour Josh Phegley slots into the lineup for game 1, at DH no less! Our offense is saved.

bryant(LF) / rizzo / baez / contreras / bote(3rd) / souza(RF) / phegley(DH) / almora / hoerner

game 1

baez fouled one off his foot -very- hard.

hope the pad did it's job.  he's staying in, but he is not 100%.

i'm about done with "bases loaded, 0 runs score" innings.

we've been seeing a lot of that lately.

Hendricks threw a 90 mph fastball so that's fun

Almora bringing the leather today in center field - also fun

So the Cubs are basically on an 11 game losing streak. With a starter making his MLB debut on tap.

Mercy

bryant(3rd) / rizzo / baez / schwarber / contreras(DH) / happ / heyward / caratini(C) / kipnis

game 2

On the positive side, Cubs will most likely have to pitch only six innings for the nite cap ... and Underwood should get a chance to shake the cobwebs out.

If I had to guess, the Cubs will make a trade for at least one bona fide left handed reliever by the August 31st trade deadline.  Kyle Ryan doesn't appear to have "it" this season.

Well well well.  Looks like the Cubs will be throwing at least seven innings tonite after all 🤪

cubs win!

jeffress save...darvish goes tomorrow.

Awesome win!

This bullpen is such a crapshoot. Other than Jeffress, it's been rocky with everyone. Tepera, Underwood, and Winkler were good tonight. But they're never guaranteed. I am really hoping Duane can start putting it together more consistently. When he's like he was tonight, he's got all he needs to be a high leverage guy.

happ / rizzo / baez / schwarber / contreras(DH) / heyward / bote / caratini / kipnis

bryant recieved some kind of injection treatment (maybe cortisone) on his left wrist today...the one he fell on last week.

souza to the 10d IL (right hamstring) and hernan perez is called up to challenge josh phegley for the batting title.

b.wieck goes from 10d to 45d IL...won't see him until mid/late september at the earliest

Things have not ended well when Mills hits a batter. 3 run homer allowed in last game and a grand slam in this one.

Superb outing by Alzolay - should have a two run lead but for Rizzo taking his eye off a throw from Bote (can't believe they tagged Bote with the error)

kimbrel vs a 2 run lead.  it would be nice to have our zillion dollar closer back in closing duty.

phew.

1ip 0h 0bb 3k, 1 HBP

he lost it for a bit after the HBP, but picked it up.  he threw a lot more offspeed stuff after starting out with 98mph heat.  he's probably not "the" closer, but he's made a claim to be back in the mix.

He looked filthy - located the fastball up and down - couple at 99

Whatever they've done appears to be working

t.bauer was warned he would be suspended if he wore his custom "free joe kelly" shoes, and now he's got a no-hitter into the 5th a few minutes after thom brennaman pretty much got fired mid-game for using a homophobic slur on a hot mic earlier in the game.

hell of a night for CIN.

t.hatch has thrown 11.2ip of 2.31era 0.86whip ball for TOR so far in 2020 (mostly in relief)...he was given up for 17 innings of david phelps.

We also got Phelps into enough games to trigger a few of his incentives.

Its almost like they have no clue how to scout and develop their own system. Hopefully the new regime in that department can do better.

It occured to me watching the Cardinals having MLB debut after debut that in the Theo era we've seen I think 6 draftees/ first contract international FAs debut with the Cubs. Underwood, Norwood, Alzolay, T. Miller, Pierce Johnson, and Zastryzny. Not a single established big leaguer.

Mets player positive for CV, also one staffer.

Mets-Marlins tonight is canceled.

Mets-Yankees tomorrow is canceled.

Now entire Mets-Yankees weekend series is postponed. Had to expect this.

san diego padres has changed their twitter name to "slam diego padres" after hitting 4 grand slams in 4 straight games.

The Cards also traded for both Jim Edmonds and Larry Walker. It's the developing part that has fallen off. Of course, it could also be the case that there are no more Matt Carpenters left to pull out of the hat.

Cubs sign 28 yr old RHRP Daniel Missaki. He was in MiLB from his 17yr old to 19yr old years and did pretty well.
He's been in Mexico and Japan the last four years and has done well also.
    He's supposedly Japanese and Brazilian.
Interesting sign. We obviously need to RP in the system
    Injuries are mounting everywhere!!

Sure, they made generally short term trades for established players to enhance what they already had or traded for players early enough in their careers that they were essentially Cardinals from the start. What they never did was to try to use the more established players as foundational cornerstones.

Essentially we’re saying the same thing. They have given up on player development to the point that even their prospects that make it to the bigs flop so that they have to do things like buy most of their rotation and hope for the best.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!
