Cubs vs. Reds (Game 44)

The Cubs continue their campaign toward the playoffs with another match-up of aces. Yu Darvish and Trevor Bauer face off again. Darvish won the last round on Aug. 29 and has since defeated Jack Flaherty as well. Meanwhile, the Reds will struggle to stay in the Wildcard race and they send their top starter to get the job done.CHC (25-18): RHP Yu Darvish (7-1, 1.44 ERA)
CIN (18-24): RHP Trevor Bauer (3-3, 2.05 ERA)
First pitch 7:15 pm central

Is there a pitcher you'd rather have starting for you this season? Darvish has been not only an ace but Cy Young probable based on his performance so far. He's gone head to head with other team's aces and won a few times already this season. If he continues to pound command his ridiculous mix of pitches and blow the fastball by opponents late, he can defeat any lineup.

Bauer has also been stellar this year, even if his performance has lagged behind Darvish's just a bit of late. Where Darvish has had one middling start this season, Bauer Had two in a row, including his loss to the Cubs at the end of August. He lost in his last start as well, despite allowing only one earned run; his defense lead to 3 more unearned runs benefiting the Pirates. Anthony Rizzo is 6-13 with two homeruns off of Bauer in his career.

The forecast is for another blustery evening with the wind coming in off the lake; it should be a great day to watch these aces contend from the comfort of your own homes.

Comments

Yu out of sorts from the very get go. Hopefully just a one inning aberration but a 3 run lead with wind blowing in gives Bauer a big advantage

vargas goes 0-2, barely checks a swing on the next pitch which bounced in front of home plate, then grounded out weakly to 2nd.

welcome to the cubs.

The Brewers softened up the Tigers with 19-0 blowout in advance of tomorrow's double-header with the Cardinals. Detroit used a left fielder to mop up.

cubs shut out for the 1st time in 2020.  boring game.  half an inning of darvish sucking, some close plays at 1st rizzo bailed out, good pen work from kimbrel/osich/adams, and not much else worth mentioning...

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
