Cubs vs. Reds (Game 45)

The Cubs lost a tough one. Darvish struggled with his command in the first inning and then was his dominant self after that, while the Cubs offense floundered against a locked-in Trevor Bauer. The series stands at 1-1 with the Reds' secondary ace, Sonny Gray, taking on an intriguing Cubs fill-in, Adbert Alzolay.CHC (25-19): RHP Adbert Alzolay (0-1, 2.08 ERA)
CIN (19-24): RHP Sonny Gray (5-2, 3.19 ERA)
First pitch 7:15 pm central

Alzolay is making his third spot start of 2020. After an initial 5-inning start with only 1 unearned run allowed, Alzolay struggled to find the strike zone and exited after 2.2 in his second start. In those two starts and 1 relief inning, Alzolay has struck out 12 opponents in only 8.2 innings pitched. In a very small sample size, lefties have had a significant advantage against the righty; his changeup is still developing and he has struggled at times to keep it low in (or below) the strikezone.

Gray's renaissance in Cincinnati has continued in the shortened 2020 season. He continues to strike out well over a batter per inning will coaxing a reasonable number of groundballs from opponents. Gray defeated the Cubs way back in late July. He held them to two unearned runs and struck out 11 in 6.2 innings in Cincinnati. In his last start, the Cards chased him in the first inning; they scored six earned runs on three walk and five hits. Basically no current Cub has had any success against him. Javy is 1-12 with 8 strikeouts.

Pedro Martinez one of the two PTBNL for Jose Martinez. I don't remember who called that, but good call!

Bummer we lost an interesting prospect. I'm sure he will excel in the able hands of Tampa

s.souza released...oops, i missed that note on the player pool thread

cubs game delayed...STL blowing game 2 in the 7th, giving DET the lead...KC (singer) has a no-hitter going through 7ip vs CLE (102 pitches)

....no-hitter over after 7.2 on pitch 116.  manager is probably very happy right now.

game on...

also, chatwood played catch today could be throwing off a mound soon.

cubs working on a comeback in the 4th...which means we're probably due for a 1 hour rain delay or something.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
