Cubs @ Brewers (Game 48)

The Cubs staged a 9th inning come-from-behind victory against Josh Hader last night to even the series at 1-1. That victory also pushed the Brewers to 5 back in the division and held the Cardinals at 3 back. Heyward was the hero, smashing a go-ahead 3-run homer and Vargas followed up with an solo shot for insurance prompting me to wonder if Vargas might actually be good for something on a team stacked with 2nd base depth. Meanwhile, Kyle Hendricks and the Cubs' bullpen deserve credit for keeping the game close for 8 innings, and Kimbrel managed to close it out in the 9th. Perhaps the offense can lead the way today and take some pressure off of a Cubs' bullpen that has been surprisingly effective in September.CHC (27-20): RHP Alec Mills (4-3, 4.74 ERA)
MIL (20-23): RHP Adrian Houser (1-4, 5.48 ERA)
First pitch 1:10 pm central

Following a string of pedestrian starts, Mills most recently earned a victory on the back of 6 shutout innings vs. Cincinnati. He lost to Milwaukee on Aug. 14, allowing 4 earned runs in 6 innings; it was not exactly a bad start, as he did strike out 7 and only walked 1 and allowed 5 hits across those six innings. Christian Yelich tagged him for a 3-run homerun.

Adrian Houser has allowed 25 runs across his last 30.2 innings (6 starts). He earned no decision in a start at Wrigley on Aug. 15 in which he allowed 3 earned runs in 5 innings. It's been death by BABIP much of the time for Houser, as he's suppressed hard contact and kept his walk rate at a reasonable level. Current Cubs boast a slash line of .304/.356/.587 against him in 67 at-bats. Anthony Rizzo has lead the way at 4-9 with a homer and zero strikeouts, and Heyward has backed him up admirably at 3-11 with a double, a triple, and a homerun. Houser really has only had success against Caratine (0-6) and Baez (1-7 with 2 strikeouts) among current Cubs hitters.

Following the game, the Cubs will return to Chicago for an off-day and then a 5-game homestand.

Comments

Bears at Lions game has no fans but Fox is using virtual fans. Essentially using green screen technology for stadium sections. It's very odd.

Brewer's D really lending the hitters a hand in this one. Nice to have the pressure taken off the bullpen.

a.mills!

the cubs 16th no-hitter (first since arrieta 2016).  113 pitches.

First we steal a win by having Hader blow a save, then we stomp then AND toss a no hitter. It's so nice to do that to Milwaukee, that's the type of late season nonsense they've been giving us in the past few years. Love to turn the tables.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
