HAGSAG: Yes, the back-fields and the stadium will be closed, even to me. And there will be 18 AZIL games played versus other organizations (AZ, COL, LAA, MIL, SF #1, and SF #2, but no OAK), nine home & nine road, starting on Wednesday 10/14 and ending on Saturday 11/7.

Any reason to read into the fact that Cam Balego is listed as just a C now? Do we think he might be able to handle C as a full time position?

BRADSBEARD: Cam Balego went through the Catcher Conversion Program post-2017 and he was catching a lot in Minor League Camp the past couple of seasons and he did get some very limited work behind the plate at South Bend in 2018 and for Myrtle Beach in 2019, but I suspect the Cubs now want to see if he can take the next step and become at least a serviceable back-up catcher at AA in 2021.

Balego is actually a legit second-tier prospect. He has plus power and a plus arm and so it's really just a matter of him becoming competent as a receiver, but of course that's easier said than done. For every Robinson Chirinos, Willson Contreras, and P. J. Higgins (each of whom successfully made the conversion to catcher), there is a Vimael Machin, Ben Carhart, Orian Nunez, and Danny Zardon who did not. So while Balego is not a  candidate to get added to the 40 on 11/20, if he makes strides to the point where he becomes a competent defensive catcher, he could see MLB in time.

BTW, if there had been a 2020 minor league season, it was pretty clear even before Minor League Camp was abruptly postponed in March that the 2020 Cubs Opening Day catching assignments would have been something like this:

CUBS: Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini

IOWA: Josh Phegley (primary), P. J. Higgins (also 1B-3B), and Erick Castillo ("phantom IL")

TENNESSEE: Miguel Amaya (primary), Tyler Payne (back-up), and Cam Balego (C-1B-3B)

MYRTLE BEACH: Caleb Knight and Eric Gonzalez (sharing primary duties) and Gustavo Polanco (C-1B-"phantom IL")

SOUTH BEND: Jonathan Soto and Jake Washer (sharing primary duties) and Alexander Guerra ("phantom IL")

EXST: Bryce Windham (ex-INF in latter stages of Catcher Conversion Program), Ethan Hearn, Ronnier Quintero, Henderson Perez, Raymond Pena, Pablo Aliendo, Orian Nunez (C-1B), and Richard Nunez (C-1B), with Windham, H. Perez, and R. Pena likely going to Eugene in June. (R. Quintero and Aliendo were the only two DSL catchers at Minor League Camp, so they were obviously being prepped to play in the AZL in 2020).

But of course it didn't happen that way because the 2020 minor league season didn't happen, but that was the way things were trending back in March.

Also, Guerra, O. Nunez and R. Nunez were released by the Cubs after it became clear that there would be no minor league baseball in 2020, so obviously they had no long-term future with the Cubs even if the 2020 minor league season had progressed in a normal fashion.

For a lot of reasons it's too bad that the 2020 minor league was canceled, but while all minor leaguers need game reps to develop, catchers (just like pitchers) really, really need regular game reps to keep them from having their long-term development delayed or stunted.

Phil, what happend to Jack Patterson?  I thought he would be included for Instructs.

Abbott, Balego, Hudson, Marquez, Megill, C. Morel, Rivas, and Strumpf were supposed to play for the Mesa Solar Sox in the AFL, but Marquez got called up to MLB on the last day of the MLB regular season and the other seven got diverted to AZ Instructs when the AFL season was canceled last month.

Otherwise, the guys who were playing "sim" games at the Alternate Training Site for three months (including Jack Patterson) are done.

Tuesday's Angels at Cubs AZIL game was canceled, so Cubs pitchers & position players worked on game simulations on Field #1.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error?

Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!
