Cubs vs. Atlanta: Series Thread (Games 13-15)

The Cubs (5-7) have dropped 3 series in a row to division opponents. After the Thursday off, they return to home turf to take on the similarly struggling Atlanta crew (5-8). With Freddie Freeman off to a Rizzo-like start, Ronald Acuna looks like the main hitter to watch out for. The 23-year-old OF is slashing .447/.500/.1000. That’s AVG/OBP/SLG, if you are wondering. He’s already collected 6 homeruns in only 12 games and pitchers are having a heck of a time trying to miss his bat in the early going. Pablo Sandoval (yes--that one) is also enjoying a hot start. Kyle Hendricks was scratched from his last start and some caution with regard to COVID-19 contact has the front office shifting players to IL lately; the Cubs have not yet announced their starting pitchers for the series. Atlanta will send out LHP Drew Smyly (0-0, 5.73 ERA), RHP Huasar Ynoa (0-0, 0.75 ERA), and a third starter TBD. Friday and Saturday’s games are scheduled to begin at 1:20 pm central and Sunday’s game will be at 6:08 pm central. The Cubs have Monday off and will then welcome the New York Mets for a 3-game set at Wrigley.

Smyly placed on IL, Kyle Wright to start. Don't know if that benefits the Cubs (would prob benefit most teams), but it surely hurts my fantasy team as I was looking forward to the K total and low WHIP Smyly was sure to get today.

i wasn't impressed with the pitching going into 2021, and this epic bat drought isn't helping.

i was expecting to get to the playoffs or really damn close.  i kinda still am.  it's not like i'd be shocked if we're trading away guys in a few months for "the future" at this point, though.

contreras HBP thing getting kinda weird...just picked up 5th on the season.  it's not like he's leaning into them or sets up like rizzo making him prone to them.  almost all, if not all, don't seem to be on purpose.

he got a lot of this last year, too.  it's tough enough being a catcher.

I agree that Contreras really sticks that front elbow (and shoulder and to some extent his head) pretty close to the zone. Plus he likes to reach toward the outer half to pull the ball and sometimes to lunge a little at the outside corner, so pitchers will want to work him inside frequently. He should get a thicker elbow guard.

the zach davies era isn't going so well through 3 games...

also, cubs getting HBP...so hot right now.  contreras, 2x baez, and welcome back matt duffy.

limited capacity (and it's a "thunderstick" giveaway night), but LAD @ SD is practically a playoff level atmosphere here in april.

this one could be hot for years.

No numbers really needed to show that this offense is terrible right now, but I decided to peruse team stats today to see exactly where the Cubs have struggled the most. I was unsurprised to find they have the third highest pull %, the second lowest line drive %, and the highest K% in the majors right now. BABIP is also the lowest in the majors, whih is to be expected when the team is making poor contact and doing so in the teeth of the shift.

That's not fun baseball to watch.

Winkler and Workman return today, Steele and Strop head to alternate site.  Yay

cubs are scoring runs early and have a lead.

i'm not prepared for this.  deep down inside i'm nearly positive this is a good thing, but i'm going to do some research and try to make sure this is a good thing.

okay, i just checked with my friend that's a dodgers fan and this is a good thing.  go cubs.

game 14...only the 2nd time with multiple extra base hits in an inning for the cubs this year according to boog.

in a world of bryzzo and baez, contreras deserves his props for his all-around game.

he protected lester's shortcomings for years.  good luck with that 40% caught stealing rate and less people attempting it in WAS with aged alex avila and yan gomes, guy.

I think somebody finally found and turned off the SUCK mode on their Cubs game controller.

It's important we ALL do that, every day.

I hope Cards management and their fans treat Willson with respect going forward. I'd be happy to still have him as a Cub. Heck, he'd even be our best DH option at this point.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.
