Pelicans Know the Way to Beat San Jose

Yohendrick Pinango doubled and scored in the 2nd, walked and scored in the 4th, and drilled a two-run single in the 8th, and three pitchers combined to hurl a four hitter, as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (Cubs Lo-A affiliate) defeated the San Jose Giants (Lo-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants) 5-1 in Cactus League Minor League Camp game action Tuesday night at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

Casey Schmitt belted a solo HR in the top of the 1st inning to account for the lone Giant run.

Myrtle Beach DH Matt Mervis left the game after tweaking something in his lower body while running the bases in the bottom of the 6th.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

With that, Minor League Spring Training is done, and players will be heading for Myrtle Beach, South Bend, and Tennessee tomorrrow. Minor League Opening Day is next Tuesday. Extended Spring Training will begin in Arizona sometime next month (TBD).

K-DUB: AZL regular season will start on Monday 6/28 and run through Saturday 9/18. 18 teams. 60 games. Five games each week. No games on Wednesdays or Sundays. Games will be "official." AZL playoffs will begin on 9/20.

I do not know about the DSL yet.

Also, Rockies will be joining the AZL in 2021. They previously were the only Arizona Spring Training team that did not have an affiliate in the AZL.

Only three MLB clubs will field two teams in the AZL in 2021 (down from seven MLB clubs with two AZL teams in 2019 when Cubs, CLE, LAD, MIL, OAK, SD, and SF had two). Don't know which four MLB clubs dropped their second AZL team, but FWIW the A's, Brewers, and Dodgers were the last three to add a second team.

former Cubs Hector Rondon and Jeremy (Jerry) Blevins have announced their retirements. Lefty BlevIns never played for the major league club but was traded in the Jason Kendall move in 2007. He became a useful bullpen lefty (at times).

I have more affection for Hector, even though he was erratic, he had his good moments too including excellent walk-in from the bullpen music

he's also one of the hardest ex-cubs to get an autograph.  i don't think he's got something against it, but he quit signing early in his cubs career and only spot-signed some stuff during spring (with cubs and astros).

he's not in the same league as adolfo phillips, though...that's almost impossible.

PHIL: Thank you so much for that info on the AZL season. And for all the updates from Mesa.

It's been a long year and a half without minor league baseball games, and your posts here have helped keep us all going. Thanks again, and May 4th can't come soon enough!

I get that FB velo isn't everything, and and keeping in mind that I did not see every Cubs pitcher throw in a game, but for anyone who might be interested here are the max FB velos for the 30 Cubs pitchers I did see throw in Cactus League Spring Training games at Minor League Camp:

Robert Stock: 101
Max Bain: 99
Eury Ramos: 99
Ryan Jensen: 98
Bailey Clark: 96
Richard Gallardo: 96
Brandon Hughes: 96
C. D. Pelham: 96
Aneuris Rosario: 96
Cam Sanders: 96
Tanner Jesson-Dalton: 95
Garrett Kelly: 95
Ethan Roberts: 95
Jose Albertos: 94
Derek Casey: 94
Graham Lawson: 94
Jerrick Suiter: 94
Riley Thompson: 94
Blake Whitney: 94
Manuel Espinoza: 93
Ryan Lawlor: 93
Dakota Mekkes: 93
Adam Morgan: 93
Peyton Remy: 93
Erich Uelmen: 93
Scott Effross: 92
Matteo Bocchi: 91
Trevor Kelley: 91
Wyatt Short: 91
Matt Swarmer: 91

Tonight's Cub game needs to be ended by the 9-0 slaughter rule. If this week is foreshadowing the 2021 season, yikes!

nothing really, just trying to pile on the misery to excuse the poor record.

alzolay has a poor ERA, but he's pitching somewhat decently.

t.williams is doing what's expected...giving up a bunch of hits and hoping most don't score.  at least he's not giving up the homers like he was last season.

I think Alzolay, Williams, and Arrieta have been moderately pleasant surprises so far. But some moderately pleasant surprises from back of the rotation gambles can't even kind of dig you out of a -1.0 fWAR hole that your supposedly best two starters are continuing to dig.

The good thing is it wouldn't be surprising at all if Hendricks tightens things up and rights the ship (he's had these sorts of slumps before). Davies I have a little less hope for just because he doesn't have the elite track record, but he's been a solid pitcher for years. I'd expect some sort of rebound from him. The bullpen might also be a case of addition by subtraction with Workman gone and Adam down (though I like Adam a lot). Tepera might be next to go (maybe for Strop?). Would help to have Wick back but that will be a while.

I think Winkler or Tepera go next.

I too am less worried about Kyle. He is typically a slow starter (as I recall from the years I've drafted him in fantasy baseball). Davies, though, tends to start strong and fade. Without looking at underlying causes, that in and of itself is something to find troubling about Davies.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.
