Cubs @ Padres: Series Thread (Games 60-62)

The Cubs avoided a sweep in San Francisco thanks to a pair of homers from the most recent team MVP candidate, Patrick Wisdom. Next, they have a 3-game rematch with the Padres. See below for pitching matchup.

Game 60, Monday, June 7, 9:10 pm central

CHC: RHP Adbert Alzolay (4-4, 3.70 ERA)

SDP: LHP Ryan Weathers (2-2, 2.06 ERA)

Alzolay won his last start, striking out 7 Padres and going five innings with only one earned run.

Weather's took a loss to the Cubs on June 1, allowing 4 earned runs in five innings. Wisdom and Contreras each took the rookie left-handed deep.

Game 61, Tuesday, June 8, 9:10 pm central

CHC: RHP Zach Davies (2-3, 4.94 ERA)

SDP: RHP Dinelson Lamet (1-0, 2.50 ERA)

Davies took a loss in his last start, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings pitched to the Giants. He has not yet faced the Padres in 2021.

Lamet had his longest start of the season when he pitched four innings against the Cubs and allowed one earned run and collected six strikeouts. It was a promising outing for a pitcher who has been building up innings very slowly.

Game 62, Wednesday, June 9, 3:10 pm central

CHC: RHP Jake Arrieta (5-6, 5.26 ERA)

SDP: RHP Yu Darvish (6-1, 2.25 ERA)

Arrieta was limited to two innings in his last start. He allowed six earned runs to the Giants before exiting and enduring the remainder of a bout of food poisoning. His previous outing was also a short affair, and a bit wild to boot, when he allowed four walks and five runs, two earned, in 3.2 innings pitched against the Reds. This will be his first appearance of the season agains the Padres.

Darvish takes the mound for the first time against the team that traded him for a season of Zach Davies and a handful of promising youngsters. While the Cubs have streaked their way to the depths of the division, to the top, and now to second place, Darvish has provided the stability at the top of the Padres' rotation that the Cubs have sorely missed. Last time out, he collected his sixth win while pitching 5.1 innings and allowing two earned runs to the Mets.

The Cubs will enjoy a day off on Thursday before returning to Wrigley to take on the Cardinals.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
