Cubs vs. Cardinals: Series Thread (Games 63-65)

The Cubs return from a challenging 7-game road trip to take on the Cardinals on home turf. The Cardinals come in trailing the tied Cubs and Brewers by 3 games in the division. The Cubs continue to labor without Trevor Williams and now Adbert Alzolay--the matchups you'll find below are my best guess at the probables.

Game 63, Friday, June 11, 1:20 pm central

CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-4, 4.59 ERA) Kohl Stewart (1-1, 3.12 ERA)

STL: RHP Johan Oviedo (0-2, 5.25 ERA)

Hendricks has won 5 in a row going back to his May 16 win in Detroit. Last time out, he went 6.1 and allowed 3 earned runs in San Francisco. On May 21, he went 6.2 and allowed 3 runs, one earned, to the Cardinals. Stewart allowed 5 earned runs in the opening game before the Cubs came back to win the slugfest.

The 23-year-old Oviedo will be facing the Cubs for the first time in 2021. He went 0-1 against the Cubs in 2020, allowing five earned runs in 9.2 innings. Last time out, he went four innings against the Reds and allowed two earned runs while striking out four.

Game 64, Saturday, June 12, 6:15 pm central

CHC: RHP Kohl Stewart (1-1, 3.12 ERA) Kyle Hendricks (7-4, 4.59 ERA)

STL: RHP John Gant (4-3, 2.63 ERA)

Hendricks has won 5 in a row going back to his May 16 win in Detroit. Last time out, he went 6.1 and allowed 3 earned runs in San Francisco. On May 21, he went 6.2 and allowed 3 runs, one earned, to the Cardinals.

John Gant is back in a starting role for the first time since 2018. He's gotten surprisingly good results compared to his peripherals; he has a strikeout to walk ratio of nearly one-to-one. He allowed seven earned runs in four innings to Cincinnati in his last start.

Game 65, Sunday, June 13, 6:08 pm central

CHC: RHP Zach Davies (3-3, 4.45 ERA)

STL: RHP Carlos Martinez (3-6, 6.21 ERA)

Davies most recent start was his second longest and possibly his best of the 2021 season. He went six innings, allowed zero earned runs, and struck out four while allowing only one hit. He faced the Cardinals on May 23, when he pitched five scoreless innings.

Martinez took a no-decision on his previous matchup with the Cubs, allowing two earned runs in six innings on May 21. His last two starts have inflated his ERA quite a bit--he gave up seven earned runs in 0.2 innings pitched to the Dodgers and five earned runs in four innings pitched to Cleveland. He did notch a season high seven strikeouts in that loss to Cleveland.

weird...k.stewart starting today (Friday) with hendricks tommorow and supposedly sunday is z.davies or a.mills

dunno what's going on with davies, but d.ross said pre-game he's have to "check in" with davies on sunday for availability.

j.pederson homers are nice, but him standing around in the box watching the ball fly before deciding to move is getting old.

he's done it on a more than one basket shot...

rizzOH!

14 pitch at bat...10 fouled, 9 after strike 2.

homer...tie game.

joe buck and aj pierzynski calling the game.

good job fox.  you're doing your buddies the ricketts wrong.

half hour bottom 2nd...5 cubs runs on 2 hits.

pederson with 5HR in 8 games.  neet.

Aroid tonight! Boo!

I rather enjoyed Pierzynski yesterday. A-Rod, yeah no.

pierz has a great head on him and is a top tier analyst (imo) when it comes to seeing what's going on with the game...his mian knock being his boring voice behind the mic.  i think he'll age into the role well if he keeps at it.

AJ was good to listen to last night. He actually was complimentary of the Cubs at times. Told good stories. Played to the crowd when they started chanting Michael Barrett. And, he countered Buck multiple times when Buck went know it all.

ARod isn't nearly as good as that.

cubs sweep the cards.  unf.

24-10 at home.  wsox are 25-11 at home, btw.  catching a home game in chicago has a killer payoff so far this year.

Tired of Aroid!

he was comparing a lot of players to oldschool guys last night.

gotta give him props for that carlos martinez/pascaul perez comparison, though...

Off all the awards and accolades Rizzo earned during his time in Chicago; perhaps the most important is being named the Roberto Clemente Award winner in 2017.

technically correct is the best kind of correct.

also, rizzo's charity work (himself and the time he gives, not just his money) is top notch stuff.

Anything to be noted about Temblador, Venezuela's Pedro Ramirez, who is shredding as the pipelines youngest player?

Arizona Phil, some folks (mostly me!) were wondering if you had any thoughts/info on Luis Devers, who seems to be having a nice ACL season despite being a bit old for the level. Got touched for a HR last night but hadn't given up multiple runs in a start before then and has struck out a healthy number of batters while limiting walks. Many thanks in advance!

The Cubs have released AAA Iowa C-INF Tony Wolters so that he can sign a minor league deal with a contending club (if the opportunity presents itself).

Because he was outrighted earlier this season he was not eligible to be traded after 7/30, even though he was on a minor league reserve list and (generally speaking) a player on a minor league reserve list can be traded up until one week prior to the scheduled conclusion of the MLB regular season.

So #11 (Ziehl), #12 (Banks), and #19 (Avitia) were the only three 2021 Cubs draft picks who did not sign.

Second contract player Michael Arias, a former infielder-turned-pitcher, made his Cubs system debut today in relief. 0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB for DSL Cubs Blue.

A GM or owner saying a player "didn't want to sign" or "didn't want to negotiate" should always be read as "we didn't want to pay them."

That said, a GM or owner can always show more finesse by saying, "I hope we can have productive talks this offseason" or something along those lines. Seems like Jed is trying to burn those bridges.

while not known as a clubhouse cancer, there's more than a few stories about his "leadership qualities" lacking or otherwise being a bit of a jerk at points in time.  they're mostly rumor, and none of the rumors are awful...

reminded a bit of this justin wilson/rizzo exchange back in 2018...

/With all the player movement in the last week, I wonder if the Cubs are now 85% compliant for vaccinated players.  We know Sogard and Rizzo were not vaccinated and I can assume the players taking their place of the 40 man roster are vaccinated.  It will be an interesting story going forward when all trade noise settles down.

Agreed on every point. I think Jed is trying to create "his" team, a fully separate entity than Theo. Probably targeting 2023 or 2024 to return to actual contention.

He absolutely shouldn't have aired that out. He ends up looking like the bad guy. This is a good way to burn those bridges.

jed shouldn't have aired things out so blatently, even if true.

"I don't know why guys didn't want to sign. I don't know why guys didn't want to even counteroffer, oftentimes. Every one of these guys would say they wanted to stay in Chicago, 'we wanted to be a Cub,' but then we would sit down and do negotiations, that wasn't how they acted."

...dude, no.  keep that to yourself.
