Sorry if this is explained somewhere and I missed it, but who knows the exact compensation the Cubs would get if they made qualifying offers to Rizzo, Bryant, and Baez after the season, all three turned them down and they each signed with different teams? I read that the Cubs exceeded the Luxury Tax in 2020, so apparently that changes the draft pick value. Thanks in advance!

I doubt that whatever changes are made in the new CBA regarding compensation draft picks for losing a Qualified Player will be implemented in the 2022 draft. They might, however, remove the penalty of losing a draft pick after signing a qualified player, and that could easily be implemented in the 2022 draft. That would seem to be a demand the MLBPA would make that the MLB owners could accept.

Other than ostensibly depressing the market value for qualified free-agents, there is really no logical reason to penalize a club for signing a qualified FA as long as the club that loses the qualified player gets a compensation draft pick. Especially since the compensation draft pick no longer has any connection to the club that signs the qualified player. (Back in the day, the compenstion pick was the signing club's forfeited draft pick).

W-RAT: Going over the CBT threshhold in 2020 but not in 2021 will not affect which draft pick a club receives if it loses a player who receives a Qualifying Offer post-2021 World Series and that player subsequently signs a major league contract with another MLB club prior to the 2022 MLB Rule 4 Draft (MLB First-Year Player Draft).

So because the Cubs will almost certainly not exceed the CBT threshold in 2021 (they are about $30M+ under the threshold right now), they will receive a compensation draft pick between the 2nd & 3rd round (after Competitive Balance Round "B") if a free-agent to whom they extend a QO (like Bryant, Baez, and/or Rizzo) declines it and the player subsequently signs a major league contract with another MLB club prior to the 2022 draft, because they will not be exceeding the CBT threshold in 2021. (It doesn't matter what their AAV payroll was in 2020).

So if all three players (Bryant, Baez, and Rizzo) receive and decline a QO post-2021 World Series and subsequently sign a major league contract with another MLB club prior to the 2022 draft, the Cubs would get three compensation draft picks (one for each player lost) slotted one right after another after another after the 2nd round and Competitive Balance Round "B" in the 2022 draft. Which slots they would actually get would depend on where they are in the master draft order and how many other clubs ahead of them in the master draft order lost a qualified player, but generally speaking, the picks would very likely be somewhere around # 75.

Otherwise, going over the CBT threshold in the - IMMEDIATELY PREVIOUS SEASON - changes the draft pick compensation for a club like the Cubs from between the 2nd & 3rd round (after Competitive Balance Round "B") to a slot after the 4th round.

Also, going over the CBT threshold in 2020 but not in 2021 would have absolutely no bearing on the Cubs signing a post-2021 Article XX-B MLB qualified free-agent post-2021 World Series. It only would have mattered if the Cubs had signed a qualified MLB Article XX-B FA post-2020 World Series (which they did not), because they exceeded the CBT AAV threshold in 2020. If that had happened (which it did not), they would have forfeited two draft picks in the 2021 draft instead of one (their second highest and fifth highest picks, instead of just their second-highest pick).

w.franco getting called up by TB.  he's amazing.  check him out.  agressive at the plate and on the bases (and gets away with it)...rather decent in the field.  javy baez meets ronald acuna type stuff...

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
