Cubs vs. Diamondbacks: Series Thread (Games 98-100)

The Cubs begin their final homestand before the trade deadline with a 3-game series against opponents they recently faced, the Diamondbacks. See below for the weekend's pitching matchups.

Game 98, Friday, July 23, 1:20 pm central

CHC: RHP Zach Davies (W)

ARS: RHP Zac Gallen (L)

I am posting this late, so the Cubs have already drubbed the D-Backs 8-3. Javy and Chirinos each went deep Davies struck out 8 over 5.1 innings, and Keegan Thompson pitched 3 innings to earn his first career save.

Game 99, Saturday, July 24, 1:20 pm central

CHC: RHP Alec Mills (4-3, 4.64 ERA)

ARZ: RHP Merrill Kelly (6-7, 4.46 ERA)

Mills was the victim of bad defense in his last start, allowing five runs but only one of them earned over 4.0 innings pitched. He struck out six Cardinals and had nice movement on his two-seamer, changeup, and curveball.

Kelly appeared to be on track for a complete game in his last start, which came against the Cubs. He exited in the 9th, however, after allowing a leadoff double to Bryant and RBI single to Javy. Joakim Soria took over, allowing Ortega a 9th inning hit (his second in as many days) and then eventually catching Contreras looking on a 3-2 breaking ball in the zone.

Game 100, Sunday, July 25, 1:20 pm central

CHC: RHP Trevor Williams (3-2, 5.68 ERA)

ARZ: LHP Caleb Smith (3-6, 4.38 ERA)

Williams earned a no-decision in his last start when he allowed four earned runs to the Cardinals over five innings. It was his first start (second appearance) since returning from over a month on the IL.

Smith defeated Pittsburgh in his last start. He went 6.2 innings and struck out 7 while allowing two earned runs. Before the All-Star break, he got clobbered by the Dodgers for nine earned runs in a single inning of work. Excluding that one terrible outing, he ould have an ERA of only 3.39. Bryant is 3-6 with a double, triple, and homer off of Smith.

rain delaying this game is like extra innings in spring training...my god, just call it...mercy, please.

few days old "news" but it seems the allegations against starlin castro (domestic abuse) are serious enough that WAS doesn't expect him to rejoin the team at all this season...not because of legal issues, but because they may want to wash their hands of him.

his entire MLB career might be over at this point.  31 years old and not having a bad season for a middle IF'r (especially the last couple weeks before being put on leave).

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.
