A's Appreciate Cub Gifts at Fitch Park

Oakland Athletics 2021 1st round draft pick Zack Gelof smacked a two-run HR and walked twice, Junior Perez (acquired from SD as the PTBNL in Jorge Mateo trade in 2020) lashed a two-run double off the top of the LF fence, walked, and scored a run, and Robert Puason (A's 2019 IFA signing - $5M bonus) ripped a triple, stole a base, and scored two runs, leading the A's to an 8-2 victory over the Cubs in AZ Instructional League game action Saturday morning on Field #4 at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

A's pitchers limited the Cubs to just three hits and retired the last 14 Cubs hitters (including seven by strikeout).

The Cubs committed five errors in the field and Cubs pitchers issued nine walks.

Christian Olivo tripled and scored in the third and Moises Ballesteros doubled and scored in the fifth to account for the two Cub runs.

The Cub loss ended their modest three-game winning streak and dropped their AZIL record to 4-8-1.

Any thoughts on Ronnier Quintero during instructs? How's the arm? I see he's catching some velocity this year

KKvG: You probably remember that Ronnier Quintero was at Instructs last year, and while he didn't play in any games, he was the bullpen catcher in every game. That's because he was at Instructs to spend 100% of his time working on receiving and catching mechanics, the area where he was most remedial.

So his receivng skills / catching mechanics are somewhat improved, but he still isn't quite where he needs to be in that area. He's a bit better, but not quite there yet.

His overall athleticism isn't too impressive, either. He's a slow runner on the bases and he's not exactly "cat-quick" behind the plate.

Otherwise, he has a strong arm from behind the plate and plus BP power that has yet to show-up in games. His overall hit tool isn't great, but if he can tap into his raw HR power and make it usable in games, then some of the defensive issues might be less noticeable. HR power that is usable in games combined with catch & throw skills can be an attractive combination for a catcher, as long as the hit tool and receiving issues aren't too negative.

I'll put it this way:

If you saw Ronnier Quintero and Moises Ballesteros down here this past week, and I told you one of them got a $3M signing bonus and the other one got $1.5M, and you had to guess which was which, I would bet that you would say neither of them really looks like a $3M bonus player, but if one of them is, Ballesteros must be the  one.

Forgotten man, Joc Pederson hits a 3 run HR for Braves in their 3-0 win in Game 3 over Brewers.

Jed reportedly finalizing the contract for the new GM...and the winner is (from the prior cited Athletic piece):  Carter Hawkins, Cleveland assistant general manager, deals with all aspects of baseball operations in a front office admired for its stability, creativity in turning over the roster and ability to keep churning out pitchers. Hawkins, a magna cum laude graduate of Vanderbilt University and a four-year letter winner on the baseball team, started as an advance scouting intern with Cleveland in 2008 before transitioning into pro scouting, rising to become the director of player development and adding more responsibilities around the major-league club when named assistant GM prior to the 2017 season.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
