Bote Is Back at Diamondbacks Black

Miguel Pabon and Brayan Altuve laced run-scoring singles, Felix Stevens and Reivaj Garcia singled, walked, and scored one run a piece, Raino Coran reached base three times on two singles and a walk and gunned down a runner trying to score from 2nd base on a line-drive single to RF, fireballin' RP Alfredo Zarraga struck out three of the last four men he faced (all three swinging) to protect the lead and record the win, and catcher Moises Ballesteros threw out a runner attempting to steal second base to end the game after earlier picking a runner off 2nd base to blunt a potential 4th inning rally, as the Cubs scored a late tie-breaking run and edged the Diamondbacks Black squad 3-2 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Thursday morning on Whilrlwind Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, east of Scottsdale, AZ.

Danyer Sanabria drilled an RBI single and tripled and scored for the D'backs.

The game was pre-planned as a seven-inning affair.

David Bote saw his first game action of 2022 after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder last October. He served as a DH in the game and went 1-3, grounding out in his first two ABs and then reaching base on an infield hit his final time up. Barring a medical setback, Bote will be playing in EXST games through next week, and then he will report to AAA Iowa on 5/23 and begin an official Article XIX-C Minor League Rehab Assignment. Because he was placed on the Cubs MLB 60-day IL during Spring Training, he must spend at least the first 60 days of the MLB regular season on the IL, which means June 6th is the earliest he can be reinstated.

In EXST Cubs roster news, RHP Dakota Mekkes has completed his EXST rehab and he has moved-up to AAA Iowa (he pitched in just one Cactus League EXST game, and that was two days ago). Also, INF Carlos Sepulveda has been assigned to Iowa (he played in the EXST intrasquad game yesterday, so the move was sudden), and 1B Grayson Byrd has been moved up to South Bend. Like Jake Slaughter and Wyatt Short, Sepulveda and Byrd were left behind at EXST when the four Cubs full-season minor league affiliates left town last month.

Here is the abridged box score from today's game (Cubs players only):

Through his first twelve Cactus League EXST games (44 PA), Cristian Hernandez is hitting 132/227/342, with a 41% K-rate and a 9% BB-rate. Among his five hits, he has hit two HR (one inside-the-park) and a triple.

If you add the three EXST instrasquad games in which he has played to the Cactus League EXST games, Hernandez is hitting 146/292/415 with a 38% K-rate and a 10% BB-rate. Adding his two instrasquad hits to his five Cactus League EXST hits, he would have three HR (including the inside-the-park HR), and the two out of the park HR were tape-measure jobs.

The main reasons for his high K total is that he has been chasing breaking balls and head-high FB.

He has been outstanding defensively at SS.

Overall, Cristian Hernandez has plus-plus HR power, he is above-average defensively at SS with a strong and accurate arm, he has above-average speed (albeit probably just average for a SS), and he is an aggressive baserunner. Only the hit tool has been disappointing, and that's only because of the alarming K-rate. His hard contact rate (when he does make contact) is outstanding. And of course he is only 18 years old.

Ed Howard Jr got hurt about a week ago, early word is it's a significant hip injury. Anyone know more?

...and a madrigal "non-error" leads to a sac fly for a tie game.  nice.

having a ball clank off your glove, but still getting it count as a hit because it was hit hard is a nice stats gift.

For sure. This lineup isn’t exactly stacked as is, and subbing out a Cooper or even a Tauchman for Madrigal won’t do it any favors.

the ESPN bottom graphic taking up 1/8th of the screen sucks.

i only use ESPN during baseball season and i'm forced to watch a baseball broadcast designed to be broadcast in sports bars and betting parlors where the news/scores of other games is as important as what you're actually tuned in to watch.

morel triple to start the season....yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳
