Cubs @ Diamondbacks: Series Thread (Games 31-33)

Despite a hefty portion of the roster currently calling the injured list home, the Cubs managed to win two of three in San Diego. They'll take on the D-Backs sans Madrigal, likely Hoerner, Frazier, Hermosillo, David Robertson, Sean Newcomb, Ethan Roberts, and likely Seiya Suzuki. See below for the daily matchups.

Game 31, Friday, May 13, 8:40 pm central

CHC: LHP Drew Smyly (1-3, 3.04 ERA)

ARZ: RHP Zach Davies (1-1, 3.34 ERA)

Game 32, Saturday, May 14, 7:10 pm central

CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (2-3, 4.38 ERA)

ARZ: RHP Zac Gallen (2-0, 0.95 ERA)

Game 33, Sunday, May 15, 3:10 pm central

CHC: TBD

ARZ: RHP Humberto Castellanos (2-1, 4.32 ERA)

even when hendricks is doing well it looks like he's ready to clock out and go home.  not a lot of fire in the dude.

Seems like the optimum time to move Hendricks is coming. Trending in the right direction, 2.5 years of team control and a reasonable contract. He should be able to bring back at least two top 10 prospects.

2024 option didn't vest, so he's only got 2023.

still, he should be an attractive trade option with a somewhat cheap (14m + 1.5m buyout 2024) followup year.  he's not an ordinary rental.

hopefully he can keep the ball in the park and show he's capable of regular 90-110+ pitch outings while the cubs are shopping him.

CIN throws a combined no-hitter.

they lose 0-1 to PIT.

6 walks.  run scored on a force out play with the bases loaded.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

wow, counsell coming with the early lineup.  rarity.

    PCA called up.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
