Cubs @ Orioles: Game 117

The Cubs make a quick pop over to Baltimore as they finish up their road trip. RHP Adrian Sampson (0-3, 3.88 ERA) is still going for his first win despite an otherwise solid 2022. For the O's, righty Spenser Watkins (4-2, 4.23 ERA) will make the 15th start of his Sophomore season.

How about having Carlos Zambrano do a few games.  Sure that could be entertaining.

Maybe do a more realistic version of holographic Harry Carey; make him drunk and then have him try to pronounce Hector Villanueva.

Guessing there is a reason I don't have a career as a TV producer.

took 10 attempts, but sampson finally won a game in 2022.

also, does mckinstry have nudes of d.ross doing nasty stuff or something?  he's getting regular time like a star player for a dude that's doing nothing at the plate.

uelmen's been worked 3 days in a row.  looks like he may be auditioning for setup/closer 2023.

yeah, i got no problem with it.  i thought he would be added to the club asap as a zobrist-like addition, but i didn't know they'd find him this many ABs.

dude profiles as a bench-injury-rest type guy, but he can play all over so that can find him ABs.  i dunno if the bat will ever show up, though.

reyes is interesting.  assuming the bat stay good, i wonder if he's off-season trade bait or part of the 2023 plans.  he's got a lot of love in the clubhouse from other players, but that's everywhere reyes goes.

Well, McKinstry’s 27 and he put up the following slash lines in his last three years in the minors (mostly at AAA).

2019 .300/.366/516 (121 G, AA, AAA)

2021 .272/.368/.510 (40 G, AAA)

2022 .335/.417/.487 (48 G, AAA)

I'm sure you've all seen the numbers - I'm just putting them out there for convenience.

Might as well find out if he’s got something that has finally translated him from AAAA to the majors. Maybe some scouts saw something that they think he can figure out with enough playing time.

I worry that Morel will lose starts at 3B as long as this roster lacks a compelling DH.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.
