"The Cardinals are interested...This is not only in play, but the Cardinals are one of the top two teams in baseball that are good fits for him." - Gordon Wittenmyer on the possibility of Willson Contreras to the Cardinals next season

i wish the cubs were in a better media market and a bigger city like STL...they could get good players, too.

joey votto is on the 60d IL and he's been in the CIN booth the past few games.

if you're not familiar with the weird headspace votto exists in...it's worth checking out.  similar area that nick castellanos hangs out...dude loves to talk, too.

higgins has the largest 1st baseman's glove ive seen in a while.  i wonder what model it is and how many dozens of cows died to make it.

From Baseball Reference: "Drafted by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 1st round (15th) of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft from University of Hartford (West Hartford, CT)."

we've 'gotten over' lots of traditional baseball notions that make no sense, but are part of the game.

he's a lefty that can throw 93-95mph so obviously he's a shiny thing that everyone wants because that means something for some reason.

now this might be controversial...but...so what.

control issues aside, which are notable, he gets hit on both his fastball and the offspeed stuff.  the hitters aren't waiting for a vulnerable pitch, they can hit anything he can throw.

Well put.  I'm often the last one to give up on a player, but with Sean Newcomb, it's time to part ways and say "thanks".

Four Cardinal double plays through 8 innings. Bleh!

In other news, Cease loses his no hitter with two outs in the ninth inning. Solid single into right center by Arraez, the American League's batting average leader.

ohtani out here in the 8th throwing 100mph.

i know the dude won MVP last year, but i still feel like people underappreciate how next-level he is as a baseball player.  this kind of 2-way player usually only happens in highschool, rarely in college, and his only peer in the pros is babe ruth.

speaking of legendary stuff out of japan...he doesn't hit, but keep an eye on roki sasaki's career on the mound.

bote finally gets some game action since returning...pinch running for the 0-3, 1bb mckinstry...who batted lead-off again...

For those of you who might not be aware, ex-Cubs SS Addison Russell is still playing pro ball. He's 28 and played SS for Acereros de Monclava in the Mexican League in 2022, where he hit 348/443/677 with 24 HR and 16 doubles in 80 regular season games plus one HR in the Mexican League All-Star game and two more HR in the playoffs. He was the starting SS on the ML Norte All Star squad and won a Gold Glove. This was his second season in the ML.

Russell played in Korea (KBO) in 2020 after not getting any offers from MLB clubs after he was non-tendered by the Cubs in December 2019.

Starlin Castro -- the Cubs SS for six seasons prior to Addison Russell -- also played in Mexico in 2022, playing 2B and hitting 240/312/323 in 28 games for Yucatan. Castro is now 32. He last played in MLB with the Washington Nationals in 2021, so this was his first season in the ML.

Hayden Wesneski has been called up to the big league club. No corresponding move has been named yet.

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.
