Reds Toss No-Hitter and Cristian's brother Goes Deep in Mesa

Marino Santy, Yoendris Gonzalez, and Eligio Paredes combined to hurl a no-hitter and Alexis Hernandez belted a solo HR over the LF fence and onto Field # 2 to account for game's lone run, as the Cubs "Red Squad" blanked the Cubs "Blue Squad" 1-0 in AZ Instructional League intrasquad game action Wednesday morning on Field # 1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

The game was pre-planned as a six-inning affair.

As things stand right now, the Cubs will be playing only intrasquad games at instructs. Of course the DSL guys are used to that, since DSL Cubs Blue plays DSL Cubs Red in the DSL and have for many years. The Cubs also had two AZL teams in 2018-19, where the AZL Cubs Blue would play the AZL Cubs Red as part of their schedule.

Here is the box score from the game:

The Cubs have signed 23-year old NDFA catcher David Avitia (Grand Canyon University) to a 2023 minor league contract and he has been assigned to the Cubs AZ Instructional League team. It was reported after the 2021 draft that David had signed with the Cubs as a NDFA, but the contract was never filed and he returned to GCU as a grad assistant.

David's brother Daniel was selected by the Cubs in the 19th round of the 2021 draft out of Alhambra HS in Phoenix but he did not sign, instead opting to join his brother at GCU.

In addtion to David Avitia, the Cubs have also added RHP Joel Sierra and OF Cristian More to their instructs roster.

Good to see Carlos Enrique García getting 2.0 innings in. He missed the whole season due to suspension (PEDs). He had promise before his suspension.

And South Bend just won the rubber game of their playoff series! Woohoo!

W-RAT: Carlos Garcia is listed as 6'4 190, but he's more like 6'5 240. He looks like Chandler Jones. He has a three pitch mix of a heavy high spin FB that gets weak contact, a hard SL that breaks sharply to the back foot of a RH hitter, and a CH, and he could be a candidate for a fast run up the pipeline stateside in 2023. Too bad he missed the 2022 season with the PED suspension, but hopefully the year off will be time well spent.

The other Cuban pitcher who pitched today (Yoendris Gonzalez) got a half-dozen swings & misses with his 4S FB.

AZPhil -  Sounds like CarGar has a stronger repertoire than most of our international pitchers at the moment. Good to hear!

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion
